The Penstemon 'Husker Red', Penstemon digitalis, is one of the most popular Penstemon in its family. Being Perennial of the Year in 1996, one can see why. Best known for its maroon-red foliage, the white flowers make a wonderful contrast. Blooming in early summer, it has a plant height of 3' and a spread of 12-18" It is best to plant Penstemon in a full sun location, having a moist, well-drained area. Being drought tolerant, 'Husker Red' looks great in a perennial border, in a naturalized setting or for cuttings. Hummingbirds and butterflies love this perennial, not to mention being deer resistant.

I love this plant, I love the color of the leaves and the white flowers. Easily grown from seed and comes true to the parent. In my garden it does not selfsow. About 2 1/2 ft tall in full sun it makes a nice midheight plant. I even enjoy the seed pods. Seems to deal well with heat, humidity, and drought.

Penstemon Husker Red

I loved my Penstemon Husker Red and was delighted when baby plants started springing up in my prairie garden. Then the parent plant started to exhibit signs of some kind of infection, large spots that had spores on the underside. Didn't affect growth, just looked like it had the measles! Found out from a plant pathologist at the University of Minnesota that you shouldn't plant it near Baby Bluestem, which vectors a pest that infects the Penstemon. No treatment can cure it, and the little baby ones all got it too. So sad! I still miss it in my garden, but the Bluestem is here to stay.
