My niece gave me a belated gift for my birthday it was a Jade plant. It seems that since I moved I can't grow any thing. Two winters in a row I lost all the leaves on my poinsettia. I'm wondering what will happen to the Jade plant.

Jades (crassula argentea/ovata) are really easy to grow, couldn't be simpler. Mine is upstairs on a sunny windowsill and gets watered when I remember! As a succulent it doesn't like to kept moist, its best to let the soil dry out completely before giving a good water, and feed as you would other houseplants.

I agree with Larry and especially about the light. Mine was grown not far from a south window, but still had a habit of getting very leggy in the winter and spindly , so I finally gave up on it. Of course the same window is much brighter and the sun stronger if the plant is directly next to the window. Even a foot away it seemed the light was too weak.

I tend to cut down on watering in winter, and definitely don't feed in winter. The light is poor with short days and it will just stretch if fed or watered regularly. Don't worry if it shrivels, like Arnie, it'll be back.

I think Larry's advice for the watering and feeding may have been the problem with mine during overcast gloomy days. If you give extra water or food , when the light is dimmer, the plant is more likely to put out extra weak growth rather than resting as it probably should.
