Growing Dahlias From Seeds

Garden Forum -> Archive Quickie

Anyone start dahlias from seed? I read a book that said it was real easy. You can either use them as annuals or lift the bulbs in the the fall. Anyone try this? I'm looking for any tips?

I have started them from seed for a few years now, you can start them indoors now, either under your lights, not a system i know anything about, not that posh here, or just place them on a windowsill.
I even managed to winter sow a few last year.
If your soil is fairly well drained you can take a chance and leave them in the ground over winter,if not get them up ,or do as i do and start some new each year.
My back garden gets very wet in the winter months so they don't survive out there, but my front garden is on a slight slope so better drained and they have been coming up there for the past 6 years.

They really are easy. these are the type that we grow at my work place. they aren't hardy for us in z5 but you can dig these cuties up and store them over the winter, just like like their big cousins.

let us know how they progress!

I grow dahlias from seed every year. They make a real show in my front garden, although I grew Canterbury bells there for a change last year.

They are big enough to plant separately so no thinning out is necessary.

They flower in the first year, even those great 5 foot cactus flowered ones.

I leave the tubers in the ground and usually about 1 in 5 lives.

A couple of years ago I dug them out and was about to throw them away. I got talking to a stranger who was passing and he took the whole wheelbarrow full, he said they were his wife's favorite flowers. Bet he got lucky that night.

dahlias are one of the easiest things to grow from seed in my opinion. As easy as zinnias in fact. In CA I never even had to dig them up, they lasted from year to year in the ground.
