What vegetables go best with roasted turkey?

I'm going to start breeding turkeys as a home hobby, and wondered what you guys cook with your turkeys at thanks giving?? Turkey isnt as commonly eaten over here as it is with you guys, and is darn expensive to buy a frozen bird.

what a cool hobby!
will you be able to let them go after you raise them? :(

anyway! potatoes......you gotta have mashed potatoes with gravy. we always have cabbage salad, so there's cabbage and carrots.

peas, green beens, and corn. sweet potatoes are popular and okra from our southern friends.

there are a few veggies, the others may have different ideas.

Please Please don't degrade turkey by putting mashed potato with it. Mashed potatoes go with sausages, as in bangers and mash, or on top of minced beef as cottage pie.

The only way to have potatoes with turkey, as with any roast, is roast potatoes.

I tried mash with turkey on Canadian Thanksgiving and it was crap. Even the Canadian girl with us admitted that roast potatoes went better with the turkey, and she's had mash all her life.

must be a cultural thing. We too eat mashed potatoes with our turkey. Otherwise were would you put all that delicious gravy you make from the bird drippings. Definitely carrots, onions, corn, yams or sweet potatoes, pumpkin and squash are good as well. Tubers must be a fall vegetable

I misread that, I thought you said bird droppings.

But mashed potato with turkey...sacreledge!

It's like standing a Faberge egg on a plastic stand.

No Pilgrims over there Rich?? I have never seen a traditional Thanksgiving meal here in the states that didn't have mashed taters. Stuffing is a must as is Pumpkin Pie.

What about the BRUSSEL SPROUTS?? That's a traditional veg to serve with turkey. Any mixture of steamed veg is nice too like broccoli/carrots/cauliflower. Any squash cooked any way, yams are good or asparagus or green beans. One year I served salad as the veg on the same plate as the turkey, stuffing and MASHED POTATOES AND GRAVY and it was delicious.

hmmm Mary that sounds so good & well balanced.

If you want more tasty gunk, how about green bean casserole? That seems to show up every time turkey is served.

I LOVE brussel sprouts... with butter, of course!

Question: Rich, when you talk about roast potatoes, do you mean "baked potatoes" - baked in their entirity - or do you mean "wedges" of potatoes baked in some kind of seasoning etc ?

I'm actually getting really fed up with mashed potatoes and would welcome a change.

Personally, I prefer a good standing rib roast... and smother the Yorkshire puddings with gravy! It's a rare treat, but I like it better than turkey!

I like lamb and even chicken better than turkey. Methinks that turkey is over-rated! BUT, that's just my opinion.

Oh my gawd! I can't wait for these birds of mine to start gettin' it on!!

I only have turkey once a year - Christmas time, as most other NZers have it then too. But Turkey is expensive to buy in the supermarkets and is only available once a year - Christmas. So I hope to get some chicks and get them dispatched at 6 months of age by my local butcher.

So being it Summer here at Christmas, we have a wide range of vegetables and fruits to cook with the roasted turkey :D

I only have turkey at Christmas. This is a deliberate attempt to make Christmas special, as most of the things we regarded as treats years ago have become everyday items now.

Hot Cross Buns are available all year round. Who on earth would buy them at any other time than Good Friday? I suppose some people must do or they wouldn't bake them every day.

and of course you need to deepfry the turkey!!! Start it two or three days ahead of time and inject garlic butter under the skin then cover the bird in a good cajun seasoning. Put it in the fridge for a day or two. Fill deep fryer with appropriate amount of peanut oil and put bird in. Once it hits that hot oil it sears the skin to keep the juices in and the heat melts the garlic butter and it soaks into the meat. The skin gets all crispy and tasty ooh yeah I think I have to get the turkey out of the freezer now. and Im making a big batch of mashed potatoes ;) green bean casserole, some homemade pickles and a hot apple pie (sorry dont like th pumpkin) maybe a hawiian pineapple cake for desert oh yeah and the freshed baked dinner rolls. Ohh stop it now Im starving
