Seems like it was just this morning , not long after I woke up at a very early 5 AM EST, that I had to stop and remember what day it is , since it seems these days I sometimes don't even know what month it is. I almost posted weather in November, and I guess it's sometimes only the Chistmas music playing at work that reminds me, what month this is . I have to say I really give away my age when I start to reminisce about Brenda Lee and her freqently played old Christmas standard. Meanwhile , I guess from the weather it could almost be mid November or what passes for November weather around here, with highs barely above freezing all day and a chance of a few inches of snow. Looks to be another very gray gloomy day, despite the cheerful music!! I have to say this time of the year, thirty doesn't sound bad for a high temperature around here, but with the incredible dampness we often get at those temperatures you might as well be sitting in a bathtub full of icewater after being outdoors for a while , since that dampness sure soaks it's way into your skin to your very core!! BRRRRRRR!! My teeth were rattling yesterday!!

Cold and blistery around here today also, but after having over two feet of snow a few days ago and then a record high and green grass again, now another big snowstorm on it's way it's hard to keep up with the abrupt changes.  I lucked out yesterday though and finally was able to get a flue shot. I decided to go early at 1:30. Shots were to be given from 2 to 4. They had only 300 shots and would you believe they ran out at 2:30. I had mine at 1:50 and there were only 89 shots left. They decided to start early.

MrSeedy, Would you believe that my brother went to school with Brenda Lee? He said she was really nice and didn't act any different or better than the rest of the kids. Of course they are MUCH older than I am. ;)

Reading all of your posts I almost feel ashamed of our wonderful weather. Highs in the 60's today and lows are only in the upper 30's lower 40's. I wish I could package it up and send it to everyone for Christmas---but then ya'll would miss the white Christmas I know that everyone up there enjoys! Hope everyone has a good supply of firewood so ya'll can sit around a nice fire and sip hot cocoa.

I went shopping in ND today and it wasn't too cold. I left my coat in the car and didn't freeze going from the car to the stores and back. It wasn't warm of course, but I can't stand a coat in the stores. It's just too hot for me. So until my teeth chatter from the cold, this works for me,bring the coat with, but leave it in the car. I have to say I don't watch PBS as much these days as in days past, when I often watched their various specials, but I was much surprised a few years ago to see a special on Brenda Lee, who despite my feeling she might not even be around anymore, was indeed still touring all over the world , where she's still popular from all the many hits from the fifties and sixties, and she's sold almost more records than any other female artist or at least has recorded more songs than any other female artist, numbering in the thousands. Anyway years ago when she went to France , the French were surprised she wasn't a little girl , since at under five feet tall, they thought she was a little girl, and not the adult , who showed up for her tour. Anyway , back to the weather , I could use some of her songs this morning to help me forget that cold snowy weather out there, and cheer things up a bit. It's still dark here, but the sun once again doesn't want to make an appearance, and it won't get above freezing all day.

In regards to a "long soak" in a bathtub, after a very cold time outdoors, I have to say I never cared for long soaks in a bathtub for years, and really wanted a shower instead, but now that I have just a shower stall, I miss the possibility of long hot soaks in a hot bathtub, and those sound like heaven about now and in this time of the year!! It seems about the time I really feel chilled to the core, it doesn't matter how many extra clothes I put on, or even how hot my furnace is set, since it still seems to take hours for me to warm up once I've gotten cold. Very unpleasant , and not a part of the winter I look forward to!!

Here it has been very cold for one and a half week, some days with very strong wind. Our lows are in the the low 20s and the highs in the the 40s. But this is too cold, we are not supposed to have such temperatures in November and at the beginning of December. November had not been that cold for 40 years !!! It seems to me we have more and more records these days ...
And what's even worse, we have no longer any sun today :(

MrSeedy
December 3rd, 2005, 06:58 AM
After overnight snows Thursday night and into the morning Friday , the long absent sun made a bright appearance for several hours and what a difference in my general mood that made. Unfortunately as is most often the case with our winter weather, by late afternoon there was complete overcast again, and there's again a chance of snow today and tomorrow. As I've often mentioned , as much as I hate the winter cold, it's those many gloomy days without any sunshine whatsoever that make winter so depressing to me. Howver it seems anymore, that starting in December, my house is almost never what I'd call comfortable with all those constant ups and downs indoors from "just warm" when the furnace is on followed by the "chill" five minutes later than seems too linger far too long til the furnace again clicks on and it finally warms again. I sometimes think my old thermostat is somewhat whacky since it seems it wants to linger for far too long in the lowest range before comming on again. Can't figure that one out except for the fact that all the heat is in the upper half of the rooms where the darn thermostat is . Anyway, there I go again with my winter complaints, but it seems winter has gotten to me early this year, and I suspect it will be a long cold winter. If I manage to keep my sanity this winter it might be a small miracle!!

I hope you're on high ground grindle, but have you ever figured that out from your relative topography?? I know traveling around town here, we're higher than most other locations so it would take a very heavy downpour to get some temporary flash flooding with quick draining waters in most spots in my neighborhood, so no long term flooding here. Meanwhile I guess it's only in the twenties here this morning with light snow and I doubt we'll get above freezing all next week, and that doesn't sound good to me so early in the season. I don't like those long term freezes , since it can freeze our ground so deep some years and cause the loss of some of my less cold hardy flowers like the Montbretias or Crocosmias.

It's still dark here , but overcast, and "more" snow possible, though yesterday's snow almost melted as quickly as it had come down. We don't have an inch on the ground, but those temperatures are going nowhere this week, with highs below freezing all week. A little early for so much cold , but I can remember colder Decembers, and shopping for Chistmas trees when the highs were in the teens and wind chills near zero. BRRRRRR, I can almost feel the cold just talking abuot it. Meanwhile my magnolia still isn't covered and I guess, since the cold is here to stay, it's time to bury the darn thing completely again under a load of mulch. Won't be easy this year though since it's getting a bit taller. Covering it completely is the only way I"ve found to prevent it freezing all the way to the ground in cold winters, though obviously, when it gets too big and tall, covering it will become impossible. I've even considering moving it back into a pot after all these years and treating it like one of my tropical houseplants , which go out for the summer , but come indoors for the winter. Even then it would most likely outgrow my house anyway!!

Hello all,
Just a note to let you all know I haven't forgotten you. Most of my plants are dead, but I still have my christmas cactus and my aloes and my snake plants.
I've moved since my last post, and I'm on a hiatus from my second job, just for christmas season, but will be back in January.
Our weather is very very cold here. Lows in the single digits, highs in teens and twenties. I've been getting rides to work, and I ride the bus home, so it isn't too bad, plus I was given a very warm winter coat by my mother, so I don't feel too cold outside, even when out for prolonged periods.
We have had little bits of snow here too, although not too much. I have high hopes of having a white Christmas this year. Hasn't happened in ten years that I can remember. Always got the big one right after Christmas.
Well, that's all for now. Hope you all have a happy holiday!
Michelle

This weather is already much too cold for this early in winter here, but I have to admit it reminds me more of the very cold winters I remember when I was a kid, but in those days the cold didn't seem to bother me so much and I'd often spend many hours outdoors playing even on the coldest days. Now it seems I'm grumbling, even if it's just a short trip out into the cold just to go to my mailbox!! I'm thinking about making another trip to Walmart's pet department again, to see how their fish are doing, but on such a cold morning I must be nutttttttts!!!! It's certainly too cold however to carry tropical fish by bus , were I even to have my aquarium purchased and operating right now. I'm dragging my feet on that , considering the difficulty of transporting fish in the cold winter months. I guess some folks even resort to putting their bags of fish in styrofoam coolers to keep them warm??

This weather has unfortunately become the very painful kind that I dread most during the winter months, and waiting for a bus that was running about five minutes late almost bordered on "frost bite" territory, with my face becomming numb and my feet as well. I've often heard that "numbness" isn't a good sign and that frost bite can soon follow, though I can remember often having numb hands, feet, etc. as a kid and never did suffer any frost bite. Painful none the less!! Meanwhile in the snow department, there's supposed to be more on the way Thursday night, and I don't want that either. We may get our normal highs back by the end of the weekend if we're lucky, and that's on around thirty most likely.
Darn , I hate winter!! It's in the single digits this morning or perhaps -8 to -10 C for our European and Canadian friends!!

I usually take one look and think , "There's another nutcase"!! I can't understand that "maybe" if someone is driving in a car and can park just feet away from a front door to a store, but not even to walk a hundred yards across one of those huge mall parking lots. I saw a guy on the bus dressed like that , and there's no way you won't be outdoors in the cold for at least five minutes in transit to the bus no matter where your going to or comming from. It's snowing again this morning , but I don't expect much . Maybe????? It's also pretty cold and carrying out the trash this morning which was covered with snow required me to stick my hands in the snow to pick up the bags, and it was near frostbite with wet icey hands and a temperature of 13. Oh well, at least there's little wind "yet" this morning to make it feel even colder! It looks like it will also stay below freezing all week again, so it won't be long before I hear all those noisy snowmobiles on the Black River, from a half mile away. I'm glad I dont' own one of the homes just up from the river, with those snowmobiles going til midnight,. Mighty noisy things!! On top of that it totally scares away most of the hungry ducks and geese, which depend on handouts so much down and the local boat landing!! Those things sure aren't very nature friendly, though all those folks who swarm to Yellowstone each winter with their snowmobiles claim they don't do any harm to the local wildlife. Oh darn!!! Despite the very cold start yesterday morning , we at least ended up with a mostly sunny day all day long and that was a "bonus" these days with so many cloudy gloomy days , day after day lately. It's again cloudy this morning and in the teens with new dusting of snow on the ground, and more snow is forcast for tomorrow.
To tell the truth I don't ever remember such a long snap of below freezing temperatures in December, and our prolonged freezes usually don't come til January here, so it's not looking like a "promising" winter temperature wise!!

My those temperatures are almost "balmy" this morning , since they're fianally in the twenties for our overnight low, instead of the teens they've been most of the time lately!! We could have up to seven inches of fresh snow comming between late afternoon today and through tomorrow. I'll pass on that , since we already have a "Christmasy" enough scene out there right now with our existing blanket of snow and I don't feel like any more shoveling. Meanwhile it seems many of our local businesses aren't even shoveling their walks , so trying to walk around here with dry feet means walking in the roads, and I don't like that!!! That situation seems to get worse year after year, and I guess most places figure that no one's walking these days and everyone is going by car.

Either the timming is way off for our snow storm over night and today, or those weather forcasters have much exagerated the amounts of snow we'll get in this area for totals. So far we've only had a dusting of snow , but it is starting to snow more heavily now. Once again, even though I just hate going out in the cold lately, I feel the urge to go window shopping and Wal-Mart was a complete mob scene on Tuesday, when I was there with my stepdad. My first "urge" upon entering the packed store was to turn right around and get back to the car. I just hate crowds of any sort nowdays!!! I have a regular walking pace, and when I'm slowed down to a snails pace by the crowds it makes me very uneasy and impatient. I can see the traffic becomming more and more congested lately as Christmas approaches and with nerves frayed and people rushing around the amount of traffic accidents in this area has taken a decided upward turn in numbers. Just not fun being on those highways right now, and the snowy and icey roads just really make things worse by multiples!!

Morning, all. Was a little frosty here this am. Bundled up and ventured out to try to get some pics of Jack Frost's handy work. Lookin' at the pics I took , it's obvious, I didn't venture far enof. Oh,well, there'll be more days.
Talking 'bout Wal-Mart...it's interesting that Christmas is a time for sharing, caring and helping folks out. So...why is it that the roads and aisles in stores are full of "Get out of my way,I'm in a hurry!", "I saw that first!" and bunches of "Me first!"? Me?, I'd rather stay home.

It's a good thing the snow never came down very heavy all day yesterday , since it was that very heavy wet kind, and it did snow nearly all day. As it stands we got maybe six inches in total , but what we did get probably weighs as much as a foot of the dry fluffy kind of snow , so it's going to be hard shoveling this morning. I do hate those heavy wet snows, and the poor critters were trying to dig through it to get to the food all day yesterday , though I cleared the feeding areas twice yesterday. There's some chance of some small amounts again today, but at least it's not brutally cold. Still seems after listening to Detroit TV this morning , it's running below normal consistently this month , since they said the average high for their area is 36F even this late in December, though I'd guess our average high here might be closer to 30. I don't think it's gotten above freezing for the last two weeks or longer here, so that ground is going to freeze very deep this winter, and I'll most likely lose more plants because of that.

It seems we just might get a little sunshine today, but it's starting out cloudy, and in the twenties. On the other hand it was about the same temperature wise yesterday morning , but very sunny with clouds comming in later in the day. Seems our temperatures are still basically going nowhere, with it still staying below freezing every day for the forseeable future. I'd say it's in a rather boring pattern!!! It's actually been warmer in coastal Alaska than it's been here lately and Fairbanks , which can be -50F at this time is in the above zero readings and not that much colder than our temperatures lately.

It's gray and cold once again this morning and I've already been up for over three hours, since Dotti once again woke me up early this morning. Seems she can't wait for me to get up on my own schedule, but once I'm awake it's hard for me to get back to sleep, so I usually end up getting up much earlier than I'd prefer. I just went out to put out the "critter" food, and to my surprise heard a very noisy robin squawking, as they do, when they're trying to communite to any other robins in an area. It sure didn't sound like the pretty joyful sound or song they usually make during a beautiful warm spring day, and he was off within seconds to , who knows where. For as splint second I was tempted to run indoors to get some old dry catfood , I've given robins on a few occasions , when we've had late spring snow storms and the robins were looking hungrily for any food they could get to easily wihtout digging through a foot of snow. Since they're not generally seed eaters, I rarely see them near the bird feeders, though it seems the suet I have hanging out might be to their liking. It looks with such an early and cold and also very snowy winter, it's going to be a very long winter for both me and that poor cold and hungry robin. I'm just lucky I have a somewhat warm house to spend the winter in as well as adequate food, but I sometimes feel sorry for those very tough robins , who decided to forgo their normal migration south to spend a very cold and hungry winter in Michigan. It's the second winter in a row that I've seen at least one robin , who decided to stay, though I always wonder come spring time if they survived to find a mate in the spring and start new generations of robins for springs to come.

As cold as it's been the past several weeks , wouldn't you know it, but it looks like our first thaw in weeks will come on Chistmas Eve and Christmas day, and though with all the snow on the ground most folks have expected a white Chirstmas was a certainty in this area, it just may be warm enough to melt all that snow. Oh well, but I'm not getting new skis or a new sled for Chistmas, so that's ok with me. I'm happy to say this has been the sunniest day in a long long time, but all that sunshine is very deceiving this time of the year, and with the strong wind all day, it felt like the wind chills were in the teens or even colder. Very uncomfortable out there again today, though my brothers cat came in for a visit and promptly sat herself in a south window, and her black fur actually got hot to the touch , so that sun must be somewhat strong comming through the glass. Now I'd appreciate more sunny days like today for my sun craving tropicals to perk up and bit and start to produce some flower buds again!!

For some reason I was expecting another bright sunrise this morning , but opening the curtains it seems that I was wrong, and I have no idea where the clouds came from , but they're unwelcome. However, knowing how that radiational cooling thing goes at night and especially when our daylight is so limited, perhaps it's good that there are clouds as it's very cold this morning even with the clouds and it would have been much colder without them. It's a "warm" 16 degrees on checking the on-line weather channel, though I expected even colder than that. I guess since there are really no storm systems in the area, we're once again getting all those "lake effect" clouds as the cold winter air passes over the lakes and picks up moisture. A slight drop in the barometer and that moisture would all be comming down as snow most likely!!

It's a regular heat wave this morning with temperatures in the twenties instead of the teens, but I'd never guess that in my kitchen, which is right next to my back door, and I don't remember it ever feeling so cold there. I can't figure that out unless it's because of the badly deteriorated roof, etc. I have two tropicals even back there since there's a west window, and the Thunbergia grandiflora has been in that location for quite a few winters now, though I have to have it on a block off the floor, since I've even had things sitting on the floor actually freeze at times in the past. I just wish my warmer areas were bigger and near the best light so I could enjoy the thunbergia's flowers , since it can flower all winter under better conditions, but it's such a rampant grower I quickly learned it would completely cover a warmer window and take over, blocking most of the light to the other plants. Meanwhile I just remembered I have some dormant caldium bulbs on that cold floor and I guess it's time to move them. Don't think they'd take a freeze!!

Looks like "of course" we'll get our first warm up above freezing , just in time for Christmas once again, and I can remember many a rainy Christmas here, despite having many weeks of subfreezing temperatures prior to Christmas followed by months of cold afterwards. Seems a little unfair to all those folks , who love a White Christmas, but not unusual here, and to make things even more dreary we're supposed to get a cold rain instead of snow for Christmas Eve, perhaps. Oh well though, I for one would like to see the birdies and other critters actually able to "drink" rather than eat ice and snow for their water supply !! I'd sure hate having to melt ice and snow all winter in my mouth , when I'm cold anyway , just to get the water I need. Obviously that water "heater" I've thought of getting for my birdbath this winter, is still on my wish list. The next queston however would be how to get fresh water there to refill it on a frequent basis, since I couldn't use my regular water hose usually, since that would freeze up. Those bird baths can really get "funky" in a hurry with lots of birds and other critters using them a lot, and without a handy hose to clean them frequently, I think it would be a problem keeping the birdbath clean through the entire winter.

It's actually above freezing this morning in Detroit after remaining below freezing for weeks, and I'd suspect it's similar here, but there's supposed to be rain comming and those thirty + degree rains seem mighty cold. I think in that case I'd prefer snow, though I don't have to shovel the rain. Maybe some snow for Chistmas Eve and Christmas day though it all depends on those temperatures. Meanwhile it was a very dark gloomy day all day yesterday and will most likely be like that today , tomorrow, and on Chirstmas. I have to say despite my instinct telling me it was above freezing yesterday morning, I'd guess it wasn't much above freezing in actuality, and with the roads being so cold I found a solid sheet of ice on my road and almost turned around and called in to work , since I wasn't sure I'd get there without breaking something, should I slip and fall. I found around the edges where the water was running off, it's wasn't so slippery , so I was able to walk the several blocks to work without falling down. Snow is one thing , but solid ice is another, as anyone , who's tried to walk or drive on it knows! Anyway it soon warmed enough to melt the ice on the roads and it rained on and off all day , turning our "Christmas" snow into some heavy slush, and there's more rain due today and tonight til it gets cold enough to snow again. I'm afraid however , with any drop to freezing right now, we'll be right back to some mighty icey roads, and I do need to shop for groceries today.

Meanwhile a have a lone and good sized flower bud on my tropical hibiscus that should have opened on Christmas Day were it not for the dark gloomy day , and now most likely it will just drop off without ever opening. When it comes time for the buds to open they either open or if not , the blooms are just lost as they won't sit there in suspended animation til conditions are right!! It was certainly a pleasure, but looking out my window right now we're getting a brief snow shower, and I'm afraid the "pleasure" of walking on clear sidewalks will be short lived!! Not unexpected though considering our normal lows for this time of the year. It's also another very gloomy overcast morning and I almost jumped for joy yesterday afternoon , when the sun made a short appearance. That's about all they are this time of year most of the time being the kind of sunshine that comes and goes almost in the blink of an eye. Looking at the forcast for the rest of the week, I only saw one day that was forcast to be a "bit" sunny, though that sunshine might last just seconds. Sunshine and 74 here today. Don't hate me. We haven't had any measurable rain in so long we've forgotton what it was like. Severe draught conditions and red flag conditions for fire. Had a wildfire on Tuesday afternoon/evening that was a little too close for my comfort zone - it was about 10 miles away, but still too close. We're getting worried about New Year's Eve cause the kids all shoot off fire works even though it is illegal to even possess them in the city. So I'd take some of that rain or even snow, instead of the freaky warm, dry winter we're having.

Its 'orrible today, kinda sleety, all wet and cold, gonna be real nasty if that freezes!

I guess there's a possibility of new snow overnight tonight, and perhaps 3-4 in. of the stuff, and I don't look forward to it. On top of that it's below freezing this morning for the first time in several days and I'd prefer temperatures would stay above freezing the rest of the winter, but that's impossible I'd guess. Oh well, after a huge gas bill, these recent milder temperatures should help the next one stay a little lower hopefully!! Mine was over $200 for a month , but my folks was over $300 for the same period, though their house is much bigger and must I say "warmer" as well. My thermostat is quite high , but it doesn't reflect the relative temperatures in most of my house or the fact that all my heat seems to be in the top half of all the rooms, and little or none near the front and back doors. BRRRR, I'm sick of winter's cold already!!

50 when I got up. Supposed to go to around 70 today. Still no rain. Dry, dry, dry. Can someone do a rain dance?

It has been raining since lunch time and has washed most of the snow away.

Forecast today is for mid-50's! :D Jesse is on-call for work but I told him I'd sacrifice and baby sit the phone while he takes the bike for a short ride! ;) Last year it was in the low 70's on New Year's Eve and New Year's and we rode so I told him I think it should be a tradition to ride out the old year and ride in the new! ;) It's also time to pack away all of the Christmas decorations! :P That will take the whole weekend, I'm sure!!

It seems that our weather rarely comes under that category of "average" around here, but I guess for New Year's Eve, it's just about spot on for average temperatures at least. That's either good or bad depending on your preference for winter temperatures I'd guess, and with a high in the mid thirties it will be much warmer than some New Years, when it may have gotten down to -10F by morning and with wind chills much colder than that, or it will be colder than a few "record" highs where tempertures might have been more spring like and in the fifties. I remember one New Years, where we had freezing rain, and I'd guess that was one of the worst if you had to drive anywhere on roads with a half inch of solid ice on them. Seems I walked to a bar that time, and walking home after a "few" was no picnic. Of course the next day was even less enjoyable, with a "slight" hangover, and those have been very few ever since. DAhhhhh!! Oh well, at least I wasn't driving!! Have a happy and "safe" one and hopefully a "hangover" free New Years Day!!!!!
