Anyone else like old movies?
Last night I was able to catch the last 15 minutes of one of my favorite movies. Rebecca is a 1940 film that is so chilling  great movie
In a nutshell, Rebecca is about a shy, poor young woman (played by Joan Fontaine) who marries the incredibly wealthy Maxim de Winter (Luarence Olivier). The only problem is that Maxim is haunted by the passing of his former wife, Rebecca. This makes it difficult for the new Mrs. de Winter. You see, Rebecca had it all; beauty, power, confidence, and was adored by everyone. This is so tough for the new bride that she becomes haunted and can feel Rebecca's presence everywhere. The mysterious housekeeper Mrs. Danforth (Judith Anderson) doesn't make anything easier for her either. Then the plot takes a true Hitchcockian twist halfway through.
Then TCM played another movie starring Joan Fontaine, called Suspicion. Joan Fontaine plays a wife who fears her husband, Cary Grant, who she thinks only married her for her money and is now trying to kill her.
The ending was disappointing. I think if they had stuck to the book it would have been much more interesting & twisted.

boo, I love those old movies. we recently had TCM added to our channel lineup and it's great. I caught part of the one with Joan Fontaine, but missed too much of it. today they had Bette Davis on one, and last night Joan Crawford was on one, with Fred McMurray.

Cliff would love to go to the cheaper cable but then they dump the TCM. No way! Since I'm not so exghausted at night I've been trying to watch a movie. Bette Davis is great. Last summer I think they played 24 hours of her stuff. I watch 4 movies in a row. talk about tired the next morning.
A couple weeks ago I tried to watch one with Jerry Lewis but once he started to speak..it was all over.

I even watched a couple of dusters last week, and enjoyed them. but I do like Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda. Not a big fan of Clint's kind of western. like the hokey stuff.
dont' like Jerry Lewis either.

I'm not a big fan of Jimmy Stewart (think I OD on It's a Wonderful Life) except in Vertigo & Rear Window. They always play those two during Halloween. Love them

I don't think I have seen Cheyenne Social club. Wow, I just googled. Nice cast and directed by Gene Kelly. :) I'll have to look into that one.
terese, it was a movie that he played several roles including a silent one. Until I heard the other role speak I was wondering why I had ever disliked Lewis. Then HELLO..no pun intended

Over the last few weeks The Times has been giving away DVDs of old films. The African Queen, Rebecca and about 10 others, I'm building up quite a collection as I have it delivered.
This Saturday it will be Cooking for Christmas with Gordon Ramsay. D'oh.

I also love movies from the 40s and 50s and Laurence Olivier is just an amazing actor. He is one of my favorite actores. There are also wonderful French movies from this period, starring incredible and unequaled actors. I have a great collection of them in VCR and DVD.

i love old movies but i prefer old horror movies. the 1920's dracula and the old mummy and frankenstein movies. I love Bella Lugosi. Some of those movies have become what they call public domain now. Basically their copy rights have expired and there are sites on the web were you can download some of these old movies and watch them on your computer. I watched Nosferatu (great silent film!) but they have non horror as well and even some old cartoons

I like the old horror movies too.
Nosferatu    Yikes, that is one UGLY guy. I watched that for the first time a few years ago and I was so (happily) freaked out. Amazing when a 1922 black & white, silent film can have that affect. Great movie!
Rich, lucky you. I would love to build up a film collection but I guess I'm pretty happy with what they've been playing on tv...for now.
adenium, Laurence Olivier is one of my favorites too. Luckily there are so many movies to watch him star in.
gardenlady, I know what you mean about the movies today. I'm signed up with Blockbuster and I have been going through their new releases from the last couple years. Very sad -_- I check TCM to see if there is something better on. There have been a couple recent movies that are good, but not many. Some have bad actors like you said, but many have weak storylines. very disappointing It's like they can't come up with original stuff anymore.
I'm afraid to admit that one of my favorites from last year was The Incredibles

I loved the Incredibles, and Shrek 1 and 2. seem to be original anyways.
DH has quite the collection of old sci-fi movies, you know the type, grade b and below. plus old kung fu stuff. japanese movies with subtitles. I don't watch them, but he loves them.
oh yes, Finding Nemo, wonderful movie. Ellen Degneres was so good in that one.
boo
November 23rd, 2005, 02:48 PM
Ellen Degneres was good but I wasn't really impressed with Finding Nemo. I really expected more with all the hype. lol Maybe I'm too picky. Have you seen Shark Tales with Will Smith? I was emailed by Blockbuster that is being shipped.
Another movie I saw was Sideways. Nominated for something like 5
academy awards. -_- why? Granted it was a lot different than anything out there but jeepers if that is nominated for 5 awards, what does that say about the choice of movies that year?!
Oh one movie that sucks is Diary of a mad black woman. Run the other direction!! That gets my all time Suck Award. :D
erdine
November 23rd, 2005, 02:57 PM
that Diary of a mad blackwoman was awful. I couldn't watch it. Sideways was okay, but I wonder too why it got all the Academy buzz.
haven't seen a really good movie in a long time. guess that's why I like TCM so much.
I don't like Will Smith at all, so I never watch anything he's in.

The Incredibles is my all time favorite pixar/disney animation and I loved their short jack-attack cartoon that came with the DVD. Not a big fan of Shrek. LOVED Monsters, Inc too. Baby "Boo" was too, too cute! ;)
Finding Nemo was okay...but like you said Boo, for all the hype...it was only okay.
I tried watching Diary of a Mad Blackwoman...but couldn't get through it.
And I think everyone should run out and grab Sprited Away. It's such a wonderful story.

OMG!!! :P
<_< Movie- thing ! Must be a sign of something or maybe I'm just experiencing a 'flashback' of the time when a topic was open for their favorite T.V. programs they enjoyed!!! ( how did I overlook this one and my views really haven't changed much since that time - way back when )!
Phil :-) :P
- what a deal -
( some people might recall what I'm talking about here , for those who don't, its a long story - but an interesting one and you had to be there )!

I remember that movie and haven't seen it in years. I guess there are some old classics that never fail to entertain, but some of the "oldies" have that sort of over the top acting that was more common in that era of moviemaking, and what we old folks call being a "ham"! In the case of Rebecca though , the acting was superb, and the whole mood perfect. You still can't beat the best of them!!

I love old movies. especially with Cary Grant or Rock Hudson. I even have my oldest daughter getting into some of them. I don't do the horror movies cause of being a coward and all, but I loved Sixth Sense when it first came out. Spooky. <_<

Terese, I've added Spirited Away to my BB que. I've heard you talk about it so much, it must be good.
Phil, I thought of you when we watched our last dvd. They were advertising a dvd set of a few seasons of the A-team. :D I think Magnum PI & Knight Rider were a few of the other ones too.
grindle, you have awesome taste! ;)
MrSeedy, do you have cable? I notice it depends on the service if they offer TCM. It doesn't seem to be always offered. I wish it was just included in basic.
Brassia, I loved Sixth Sense too. It was one of the movies that I didn't have any idea about the ending. I love that. There's nothing worst than being 5 minutes into a show and already know what is going to happen.
This isn't a horror movie, but a funny thriller? Have you seen Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant? Another one that I love to watch around the holidays. Nice to see someone's family is nuttier than mine.

I love that one. Those old girls are a hoot.
We had an exchange teacher from Australia when I was in high school. Arsnic and Old Lace was one of the novels that we had to read in his english class. With his accent I thought that he wanted us to read Arsnic and Old Lice....I had a heck of a time trying to figure out why we were supposed to read about old lice.

Unsurprisingly, I suppose, I prefer the old English films, whether they are from the Hammer house of Horror or the Ealing comedies. The Carry on series of films has become a national institution, some go some bad.
Vincent Price in the two Dr Phibes films are great, as spoof horrors.
But My Three favourite films of all time are.
1. The Family Way. (John and Haley Mills)
2. Ryan's Daughter
3. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

there was an English movie with Hayley Mills and in it her and her brother found who they thought was Jesus in their barn. I can't remember the name, but it stuck with me for some reason. I watched a few Carry on movies, but DH and Iboth loved the first Pink Panther. Peter Sellers was hilarious

Ohh the Pink Panther movies were great weren't they. I think those Carry On movies are on the tv here on a weekly basis, they seem to still be quite popular.
I was trying to think of this old movie I think it's called The Ghost and Mrs. Muir or something like that Gene Tierney was in it I think ....Its about a woman that buys a house on the coast where a sea captain is haunting it...does this ring a bell with anyone?
Come September with Rock Hudson and Gina Lolabrigida is one of my favorites.
