My DH planted our next year's crop of garlic today. Full moon in November is the time he plants it every year and it grows HUGE.

Get out there those of you without snow or frozen ground and get your "stinking rose" planted.

That sounds interesting. I think that I'll plant some this weekened. It will still be pretty close to the full moon to succeed, right???? <_<

That's interesting. Does he plant them at night, during the full moon or just the day of? That moon can is indeed a powerful thing...

I wish I had some garlic to plant. I didn't see any to buy, except in May. Next year I'll order some to plant late. It's great for roses. Connie

Yes Dandy, Soilman and TPS, you can plant it during the day - he does - if your soil has thawed go ahead. It's not too late to get it in even though the full moon has passed.

Buster why not buy some from the grocery store and plant that? You don't really have to have special "seed" garlic. We just plant the stuff we grow to eat and when we harvest it we select some for re-planting. That way you get "free" garlic year after year.

Thanks, Mary. I didn't know you could do that. I'll get some and plant it.I read the other day that as long as you can dig, you can plant.Maybe my ground will thaw enough for me to dig this weekend. Connie

Connie, I always plant the garlic that I buy from the store.... when it begins to get its green growth, then I bury it in the ground.

Mary's "full moon in November" rule - is new to me.... and I'm definitely willing to give it a try! :P

Good for you Transplant and the rest of you. There's nothing like homegrown garlic and it's a crop that lasts all year if you grow enough.

Nothin better than "free spices" I do it all the time with anything I possibly can.

when the leaves start to droop, you bend the stems down to the ground for a week then dig em up and let then cure someplaces warm and dry for a couple of weeks. Easy :)

i can't wait. thanks ts. i dont know what kind it is. the dh brought it home from someone at work.
i have alway heard you can't grow the stuff from the store, but now i will stick mine into the garden when it starts greening up instead of throwing it away. good tip.!! :D

My DH was looking at the new crop of garlic which has started growing and wasn't satisfied with the amount that's coming up so he planted some more in the bare spots this week. Also he put screens all over the vegetable bed (well as much as he could cover) to keep out the neighbour's cats. It's hard enough with just our one cat but you wouldn't believe how many cats try to use our veggie bed as a kitty litter tray! Don't they have dirt in their own yards?

i know, isn't that the worst? cats should be contained in their own yard, just like dogs.

Can it grow in pots? And if so how is it grown? From cloves of garlic or seeds?

I was given some garlic 2 years ago and couldn't tell when they were ready to pull so I just pulled up part of them. Last year the ones I left went to seed and I have hundreds of baby garlic sprouted in the garden now.:unsure: If anyone wants some this fall I'll let some of them grow, if not I'm going to pull them. There is no way I can use that much garlic!

use the babies as seasoning! cut them up and uses em fresh sprinkled on stuff or dehydrate them for later use!

I'm not sure about growing it in pots as we overwinter ours in the ground - it takes a long time to grow. I always save some of last year's cloves for this year's crop. We've been growing our own garlic this way for years and years.
