There was an interesting programme on the television today about growing roses.

This guy had a bed of roses, half of which he pruned in the traditional way, the other half he just whizzed a hedge trimmer over.

The difference was stunning! The hedge trimmed ones were much stronger and had far more stronger healthier flowers. Just goes to show the old ways aren't always the best.

A lot of rose farms use this method as does the head gardener(actually it's probably his minions)0f the race track where the Melbourne Cup is held. This method of pruning is good for a couple of times then you need to thin out and remove deadwood. The gardening show on telly have done trials and the roses are justas florifourous.

I took cuttings from a rose garden (not mine) and stuck them in a hanging pot in my kitchen window and they seem to be doing just fine. I used miracle-gro potting soil because i would not use it in my garden and my mil gave it to me. The cuttings are putting on leaves but are they rooting?? I read somewhere that you should never use any fertilizer when trying to root these?

is there any need for me to worry?
