(Gee, I seem to be on a 'death' tangent lately...hmmm)

Anyway, I recently bought a lot of hosta babies from eBay. It was for Golden Tiara. When they came they were little seedlings- one lone leaflet with decent root structures. I planted them right away. This was about 3 weeks ago.

Obviously they perished with the first frost. My question is...not knowing the hardiness of seedling hostas...what can I expect next spring? I'm in Z5 here in NH, but have never had hosta, and the only other ones I put in this year were mature divisions from a neighbor, so those will most likely be ok. I'm just not sure about these babies.

We're talking 96 baby leaflets. Should I mulch them, or is it too late? The bed where I put them will need some tending to in the spring, as it's lower than I want it, and in the 'drain zone' from my house. It needs to be raised some.

Thoughts?

Mulch will not hurt! :D But they should come back as long as the roots are ok! It may take a couple of years for the babies to grow up! ;) However in 2-3 yrs you'll have a LOT of hosta! :D

Mulch nicely and you may be surprised next year. As Moonbaby stated, as long as the roots are still good, you will have plants next year. Right now they are going into their dormancy stage.

 I planted 2 new baby hostas this year also, they are the giant variety, can`t remember the correct name for them. They have huge sorta round leaves, but these I planted were only half the size of a small table doily, bout three or four leaves on it. They seem to be doin ok yet. At least they took for me. Now if the roots make it over winter I`ll have some giant hostas to show next year. :D
