Well, I cleaned up my greenhouse a bit today. Took out the over-grown cucumber plants. I knew there were a couple of cukes in there, but to my surprise, there were this many.......

Cucumbers have a way of hiding themselves like that. Good score for you. We're still eating ours and will be for at least another 2 weeks. It's a good thing we love them so much and never get sick of them.

Mary, I've been giving away cucumbers to my friends, neighbours and people that I work with... They were coming out of my ears!!! What? What? I can't hear you!

No chance of any hiding in my plant. I only grew one as it should produce plenty to keep DW & DS fed. I didn't allow for DS forgetting to water it while I was away for two weeks in July.

Yes, Rich. After cleaning up the debris (while still in bloom - but I'd had enough) I've decided that one plant will be more than sufficient for me!

 I had some in my corn patch along the fence I had forgotten about and when i cleaned it up, I found about a dozen cukes too! ^_^

I wonder how many folks even realize that cukes can turn color, when they're past their prime for normal eating and the seeds are ripening. I used to be so careful when picking my cukes , so as not to miss any, since ripening ones on the vines will greatly reduce the overall production of the vines, but it always seemed I'd completely miss some of them till I'd suddenly notice some bright yellow or orange in my cucumber patch, that would let me know where all the ones I missed were hiding. It's almost like they have their own brand of camouflage , so they can have at least a few fruits go to seed , without some critter (humans included) eat them before they're ripe with seeds. I don't think they're very tasty at that "ripe" phase, but never had the nerve to taste an orange one!!!

Then sometimes they split, and stink something rotten.

I think you're right not to try eating them at that stage.

To be honest I find the smell of a fresh "edible" one pretty repulsive, but that's another story.
