Aww  woken up to pouring rain and strong winds
How exciting though   I've really come to appreciate that noise. Our temps are going up a bit which is nice because I really didn't want to keep my tropicals in from Sept to May/June -_-
I have so much to do before winter is here.

I'm not ready to bring all my plants indoors since I'm still waiting for those brug. flowers and don't want the buds to drop off before they even grow and open, as they did last year. Looks down the road it will be summer for a few days and even maybe even a little warm, but with fifties on the way by the end of the week, it won't be possible to leave things outdoors much longer. I must say all those ups and downs in temperatures and rain comming and going every other day or so is making my body complain long before the coldest weather of winter even arrives this year, and I'm already feeling the aches and pains I suffer all winter arrive early this year. Darn!!!! I also have to add that all those comming and going warm and cold fronts are making it very windy every day lately here, and I doubt my brugs are happy with that. I had to half way bury the pots and yet they'll still being blown over constantly and that damages the plants.

Brrrr, fall is really here! Very chilly the past few nights, in the low 40's. I believe we might warm up to the high 70's though during the day. All the tropicals are chivering a bit. Looks like it's time to start bringing them in. Looks like I have a big job in store for me this weekend. ;)

It wouldn't be so bad with a light warm rain although working the soil of muck a can't be done with good results. I kind of like the rain especially when I can be louder with a thump, maybe a big clump of grass or a hard shove of a shovel. I really like working alone.....Hey since it's freshly rented have you seen the UK film..almost sure...Greenfinger....I had to play it one time for my paroled ex BF before I dumped him. Hard times never looked so easy. I don't think he'll ever get it...but when with me no trouble.

Here in Switzerland, September has finally been a beautiful month in spite of a very bad beginning. Temperatures were around 20 to 25 degrees C during the day and around 15 degrees C at night, which was better than July or August !!!
However, October has started and it seems it's already November. We have lost 10 degrees C in one night, so it's now barely 13 degrees C and it's raining, raining ... :( :( :( :( :( :(

I can feel a hint of fall in the air, the mornings and evenings are cooler-low to mid 70's with less humidity but by afternoon it still is in the 90's where it don't take much effort to work up a good drenching sweat. We will cool down here soon and it will be a welcome relief, don't look forward to the short days though, never have liked it when it is dark by 5-6 PM. :(

Great granfather made it. I like to keep moving and October is the best time of the year for me when I sit stand..just under it's sky....the best what ever it gives me. It's just been one of those years with no rain. I sat out back in a theraputic garden being interviewed by a women going for her phd in hort therapy and in the process of writting a book to help promote the practice. The garden has no irrigation and the designer thought it would be a really good time to speak to me because I was out of work, as you know for almost 3 months this summer. I spoke up at an arboretum meeting recently about how sad I felt when I took a look at what the garden became. I knew it wasn't watered often enough and it suffered. That was the whole point about the therapy side, maintenance. My boss pulled me aside later and told me I should be more positive, but I think I am meanwhile every dept is suffering it seems from low moral but I just keep on trugding along with pulling hoses if I have to...least liked job at least pulling them out and putting them back, standing there and wondering is a pleasure. I think it made him look bad and I will admit we are so short staffed....A socialogist game from New England to do some research a few weeks ago and his eyes popped out of his head just as Emma's today about how much I care for...I arrive at work befor the sun and just do what has to be done first and sometimes it's irigate, especially lately. I'm beginng to think that those who suffer from too much rain and depresion can't complain like a person who has just too much sun. We need rain too. I wish I could control nature but it has total control over me. I'm going to redo the garden with what I have learned about this dry hot summer and go from there. It's all I can do to help me and everybody who uses it.

It was a case of those summer muggies here yesterday and even though the thermometer was't much higher than perhaps 80 it was terrible humid and uncomfortable. I was sure I'd seen the last of those warm humid summer like days, but we can get some very damp , but cool temperatures in the fall as well.
I tend to prefer those "dry" sunny days in the 60's or low 70's for our perfect October weather, but we may get that comming this weekend!!

I can feel Fall in the air here also. We went about 18 days with high heat and no rain, but have had a little rain this past week, and the azaleas in particular were very happy to get it. About a mile North of us it has rained almost every day. It seems that North of I-10 it rains and south of I-10, where we are, we get less.We are still having 80-90 degree temps in the afternoon.

I just can't believe the screwy weather this year, with it in the eighties here yesterday and then heavy snow not terribly far to the west. Unfortunately that cold air will be here arriving tomorrow sometime, and it will be thirty degrees colder on Fri. I can feel the shivers comming on now with such a huge drop in temperatures, and it's no wonder with all those fluctuating temperatures and frequent rains comming and going, my body is complaining lately with lots of muscle and joint pains, from all the big fluctuations in weather. Not a good sign for this winter. Seems the pain arrives by Dec. the past couple of years and doesn't leave til it warms again for me , say in May or June of the next year!! Time to start looking for some good "pain" pills, as my Aleve does nothing for it anymore!! I do dread the "cold" of winter nowdays!!

Looks like today may really be our "last day of summer" with highs in the 70's today and even in into the 80's for a few days. Near record warmth here lately, but tomorrow won't hit sixty degrees and of course much colder nights on the way.
Meanwhile my brugmansias are still outdoors and growing ever larger flower buds each day, but I think time is running out for them to bloom outdoors before it gets too cold ever day for any further growth and even colder at night! Oh well, since the buds are larger now, maybe they'll hold on , if the plants are brought indoors , unlike last year , when they all dropped off!!

No three letter words either if you consider that stuff that comes with the "s". Ice that is!! Anyway , no ice this morning , but after feeling very summery most of the day yesterday, our cold front has arrived and I guess I'm lucky it's even in the upper 40's this morning and not colder, but it's not supposed to warm much above those 40's all day today. Deffinitely too cold for my remaining tropicals outdoors for highs!! Darn, and I just realized my biggest brug. is almost too tall for any room in my house and all the flower buds are near the top , so I can't cut the tops off yet. Oh, what to do!!!!???? My old powder puff is again to the ceiling , where it gets little light near the tips of the branches and my two biggest palms will be brushing the ceilings again, once I bend the upper fronds to even fit them in.

I swear my teeth were "chattering" yesterday with the stong winds and low temperatures and I still need , I guess, to bring the last of my tropicals indoors.
After all the painting the day before, I was too tired and sore to move lots of plants yesterday, so those plants will have to put up with the chill for another day or so most likely. I'm relieved that it did stay in the upper forties overnight, but with the very cool high yesterday, I'd guess those roots are shivering in their pots, and those tropicals roots can almost be more critical that the topgrowth, and don't take chills very well, before they go into shock!! I guess some tropicals will show you very quickly , when they're not happy with the cool soil in their pots, by wilting severely, and I once did kill a beautiful specimen of Episcia by leaving it outdoors just for one night in southern California, when it dropped into the forties over night.
The poor plant looked like it hadn't been watered in weeks , the poor thing was so badly wilted by the next morning, but most folks would think it just needed water with the wilting, though the soil was very wet, and even after warming up back indoors for a day , there was no sign of improvement with it "perking up", so the roots had died completely from the short chill. I've seen other tropicals do the same thing with the sudden severe wilting from cool tempertures, but many others won't signal their displeasure til a few days later , when leaves start yellowing and dropping like they're a tree going through their fall moult!!

39 this morning , but at least the sun is comming out today, after remaining hidden behind a thick layer of clouds all day yesterday. With the wind and clouds it was extremely chilly all day outdoors, and I noticed many people wearing almost winter "duds" and still looking very uncomfortable with the chill. After all it was in the upper seventies to low eighties just a few days ago, and a 30 degree drop is just to much of a change for most bodies to adjust to quickly. I know , I sure felt cold mowing yesterday , though I had a heavy jacket on. I also brought most of the rest of my houseplants back indoors for the winter, but still have a few left to move today, but I've already run out of space!!

Looks like we have about the coldest weather in this area , this morning at 48, and I'm still hoping for some sun and slightly warming temps. to move those brugs back outdoors for some sunshine. I won't hold my breath though, as the forcast is for clouds almost all week. As much as I dislike our cold temperatures in the fall and winter, it's those very dark cloudy days that seem to be an almost everday occurance here that gets to me. It's surprising how lots of sun on even the coldest days of winter can lift ones spirit, but those gloomy days here are just too numerous most years. My plants also respond to the extra sun some winters by flowering all winter long and that's a bonus as well. Oh well!!!

Talk about a weather rut!!!! The sun never did show up all day yesterday and it's again completely overcast now just before sunrise, so I won't see one! Despite never warming all day the low is actually the same temperature as the high for yesterday, so at least the nights haven't been cold. If we don't get sun soon I can see all those brug flowers dropping off very soon, so I may move them back outdoors regardless of the cool highs. The least we could see , would be some needed rain, since none of those darn clouds are even giving us the moisture we need again, but then it would be even gloomier!!! Oh well, but when I think of falls and winters in Michigan, those periods of day after day of cloudy gloomy weather are the "pictures" I thought of when I lived in sunny southern Cal. Typical!!! I guess we made up for those cloudy days last summer , when we could have used more clouds and rain, instead of day after day of sun and heat!!!

Looks like we're starting to get our typical midfall weather with some very chilly air from the Canadian praries comming in quite regular, and with the wind yesterday, those fifties felt mighty chilly. I guess our normal highs should be in the low to mid sixties this time of October, but fifites are a bit chilly after almost 80 less than two weeks ago. BRRRRRRR!!! We still need rain as well!!

Looks like frost is threatening this morning, with lows in the thirties, and still my b.o.p. is outdoors as well as a few other plants. I still have some orchid cactus and Christmas cactus out there as well, but the buds are forming on the Christmas catuses that were started over from cuttings just last spring. Oh my, the weather report form Detroit said it was 39 here , but the weather channel on-line says it's 35. Guess it's time to start bringing the rest of those plants indoors!! It is supposed to warm a bit today though so I'd still like to "wait".

Seems it's been a strange year for the lawns here this past spring , summer, and fall, with the grass starting green, turning brown, turning green again after a little rain, turning brown again, and now the darn thing is growing with little rain the past few weeks like a "weed" and then just when I want to mow , it rains the night before just enough to make the grass very soggy. It's in the upper forties this morning , which isn't bad for this time of the year, and should get to the low sixties until , increasing clouds cause the temperature to start dropping in the late afternoon and a wind shift. I guess this time of the year 60's for highs are good. In less than a month that "s" word is possible, and I can remember many a Thanksgiving trip home being postponed by "S" storms. Forgive me , but I still can't stand the sound of the "s" word!!!

I was a bit "alarmed" this morning looking at the Detroit TV stations regional weather temperatures , when they said it was 30 here, and then later 29 as the temperatures stil continued to drop just before sunrise, but typically, the temperatures can vary widely around this town, and though some spots might have been that cold I'd say it's in the upper thrities here, and those tropicals still outdoors still look fine. And even more to my amazement , I see the second brug has the first flower opening even after such a cool day yesterday and such a quick temperture drop in the evening. Oh well, I guess I can't push my luck much longer with bringing the last of those tropicals indoors for the winter, though I still have no idea how they'll fit into my already overly crowded house. It's bursting at the seams with plants!!

Really pretty day yesterday. Finished planting bulbs. Very hard frost here this morning. Might be lucky to see 60 today. Glad we moved the tropical hibiscus and brugs into the enclosed front porch yesterday. It's not heated but better than freezing and it has lots of windows for sunshine. ^_^ The 2 hibiscus are covered with buds, so hope they continue to bloom a little while longer. The brugs leaves are turning yellow and starting to drop, so it won't be long now.

Gorgeous! We got a bit of much needed rain last night. Today the temps
started dropping rapidly. Supposed to be 40 tonight. and in the 30's by
Sunday.
:( Needless to say with all the great, hot weather we've had--I haven't
hurried around winterizing. Guess I will this week-end. Did have the
perennials mulched and bulbs planted. But just couldn't make myself
do the inside work necessary to bring in the houseplants when it was 80
degrees. :( Procrastination always leads to lots of aches and pains.
To those of you in Florida(including my daughter)--I am praying for you
this week-end. Hope Mother Nature gives you a break!!!

I sure wish that folks had thought to plant more colorful trees here, as it seems most of our local trees are silver maples , that don't put out the best colors, and looking around the neighborhood there are only a few really colorful "red" maples that really make their presence known. I'm surprised your trees are so far ahead of ours here Clams, but I guess the "red" maples are in color now, and it's only the predominance of our very late changing silver maples that make our color arrive so late most years. It's sometimes mid to late November here, before those stubborn silver maples finally drop their leaves, and make us go out into some "by then" very cold weather for a late cleanup. Anyway our recent cold nights and very chilly days will start to change things soon and the color should soon arrive. It's sunny , but only 42 right now, shortly after sunrise, and it never got out of the mid fifties yesterday, with lots of clouds late in the day. Looks like we'll have to work hard to find even a few sixty degrees scattered in this long period of cold weather comming all the way to next spring!!

It's 44 here right now, and I'm glad for even those temperatures. It seemed with the sun yesterday and cool temperatures for highs, the danger of frost was a real possibility over night , had the wind died down much. I still have tropicals out there!! Seems we're getting to about our "normal" first frost date right about now, as there are few halloweens around here , were the mums haven't been touched by frost at least once.
MrSeedy
October 23rd, 2005, 08:05 AM
As is typical , I guess our "averages" are a mix of above and below normal temperatures, and the truth being known, we hardly ever actually have our "averages' for actual temperatures. I sure wish we would because some of those averages can be almost perfect for comfort. My point is , that we're making up lately for our above normal temperatures the first week of October by getting much chillier temperatures now, that don't seem at all "average". Yesterday with wind , overcast which kept away that warming sun, etc, we barely got to fifty degrees and it felt at least ten degrees colder than that. My mom was itchy (as usual) to have her dahlias taken out before the "cold" weather hit , and as it turned out it was cold anyway, though a month from now there could be a foot of snow and temperatures below freezing. I would have prefered to wait (as is typical these days) for a sunnier and warmer day to do that job. I did save the small tubers this year for replanting next year, though oftentimes most may be too dried out and totally dead come springtime!! Meanwhile my brugs are "still" outdoors, but the new growth with those cold highs has come to a complete halt now. I have one flower bud thats' been near opening for days now and which hasn't grown a milimeter in a week!!

Looks like we had some light sprinkles overnight and it's very cold and windy this morning, but at least there's a bit of sunshine. Now if that would just stay around for most of the day, since it seems we lose our sun by afternoon every day lately and it's been sort of cold and gloomy almost every day lately. The on-line temperature says we're only 38 and I think that's about right this morning. Too cold for me already!!

I have to say the weather here lately , seems more typical of early November, but not quite as cold as late November. It's those windy , gloomy, and very chilly days of November that really let us know that winter is on our doorstep here usually, and not the sometimes mild and often sunny days of October. Don't know where that "nice" weather went, but I hate our weather lately!!

October 26th, 2005, 08:31 AM
The sun is trying to come out , but lots of clouds out there again this morning. Clearing skies over night usually mean frost or hard freezes this time of year if our highs don't get much above the low fifties, so I should be happy we get over night clouds , I guess!! The brugs are still out there , poor things!! I think they're getting a bit weary of the chill, and some leaves are yellowing now. I think they'll be in soon. It's a damp and windy 41 this morning after getting the backside of that northeast storm yesterday with a tiny bit of rain, but I did have the sprinkler on , I hope for the last time, on my back shade garden, at least for this fall. It's been weeks since we had rain again!!

Felt like a slight chill comming over night, as I walked home from work in the midevening, and though I wasn't ready to bring those last plants indoors, I did worry about frost. A sigh of relief this morning , but it is below freezing in some areas not far away this morning. Not getting any warmer either today , when we may be lucky to hit fifty degrees. We seem to be gettting some moring sun most days lately , but then every afternoon it clouds up again , and half the day is gloomy and overcast. Oh well, at least it's half a day of sun, but these recent temperatures seem a bit chilly for even late October!! Here's a question for most of our northern gardeners, and I don't know if they have an "equivalent" term in GB, or Europe, but what ever happened to "Indian Summer"?? By definition , I guess it means a period of warmer weather in the fall after the first frost , and usually lasting at least a week. I mean at least 70 for highs !! I don't remember having a "true" Indian Summer here in years!! How bout the rest of you folkss??

I went the store and was quckly reminded it's time to start wearing my heavy winter coat "already"!! Darned with the dampness around here, that that 41 temperature , didn't feel more like it was in the twenties. The dampness here can make temperatures feel 20 degrees colder than the actual air temperature, but they still don't have a winter eqivalent opposite to the "heat index" , since that dampness can really soak into your bones and even seems to seep into the heaviest of clothing. BRRRRRRRR!! It seems nowdays, once I get this cold it takes hours for me to warm up again, so I try not to get to that point, if possible. And it's not always so!! I wish I had my old bath tub back , since a long soak in a warm tub , might do the trick.

Just went to the Weather Channel on-line and it says it's 37 here this morning, and that's a relief , since I "still" haven't brought the brugs in and I'd hate to see them damaged too much!! They still have flower buds and with a slight warmup forcast for this weekend I might even get some more blooms open before they're brought in for their haircuts and winter storage. A friend stopped by yesterday , and I think he was taken with the brugs and of course wants some cuttings. Now if I can go against my normal intuition about starting large cuttings from plants, since large cuttings can be difficult, I want some big pieces with the "Y's" on top and a good stem for height in their first year comming next summer. I'd hate to see those "Y"'s killed by a frost. After such a warm first week for October temperatures we turned right around the next week and I think it's been much colder than normal the rest of this month. Maybe next month we'll make up for that with warmer than average temperatures, but I'm more afraid thos cold temperatures may be just an introduction for some much colder weather for the entire winter.

We finally got out of the forties yesterday and with clear skies going into the evening and dropping winds that meant---------------? Yes, one Detroit station says we have 25 degree temperatures this morning, which made me a bit nervous for my 'still" outdoors brugs, but I walked out there to check and there's absolutely no sign of frost. Must be a different address than mine they're reporting the temps. from , but it is a "wake-up" call that I can't push my luck much longer, and I'll have to get out those pruning shears and cut those big plants back so they're fit a little easier back into my house. Oh well!!!!!! Sure was nice to see more sun though and those forcast highs near sixty today make me want to "stretch" things just a few more days??

The frost isn't "on the pumpkin" so to speak this morning , but once again I see a very heavy layer of it on most of my neighbors' roofs again. I guess it's a case of there being enough heat still in the ground to keep frost away near ground level , but ten or more feet up, that heat has been lost and hence the frost. Yesterday the Detroit news said it was in the twenties here in the morning , yet there was no frost anywhere in my yard, but only on the roof tops. but this morning the same stations say it's in the upper thirties here, yet there's those frost roofs again! I can only say I'm somewhat relieved that there's still no frost on my brugs. which are "still" outdoors, but I think they did enjoy the somewhat warmer afternoon temperatures and sunshine yesterday afternoon. Now, if we would only warm up again?? I'd still like to leave those brugs out a bit longer, considering I'm in no hurry to try and fit them into my already "plant" crowded house!!

Yesterday , was near "balmy" after those windy chilly days that barely hit fifty, though I don't think it hit seventy here. At least it was very sunny and almost shorts and teashirt weather. Surprisingly I woke up this morning to find it completely overcast again, and not sunny as I expected, and also some signs we'd had just a sprinkle of rain over night, and it's in the forties, I'd guess, so not those thrities we've been getting some nights. I just hope it either clears up or even rains if it has to be overcast and gloomy all day. I'd guess we've not had more than a quarter inche of rain in three or more weeks and some of those plants going dormant still need some moisture to keep them in good condition through the winter months, and the conifers especially. People don't realize those conifers need water in the winter , but they continue to take up water whenever possible through the winter months in order for them not to dry up and suffer winter "burn".

It rained over night and it's 48 this morning , so not too bad for this time of the year. Of course I'd put the sprinklers on and spent some time watering since I want to keep those mums looking good for at least a little longer til a hard freeze takes them for this year. I also think since mine seem to get new offsets from the stem bases , which seem to overwinter for next years stems, they still need enough water to keep those roots from drying out. I sure would like to see some sun today however, since it's been in sort of short supply the last month or so. Much too gloomy for my "mental health"!!
