Good morning,

Good to be back on the forum...have been away for awhile.

A couple questions. I have an urge to setup an early fall/winter garden, and I was wondering what small crops some of you have had success with. Being in Arkansas (zone 7b), we're not going to have any deep freezes, so I'm wondering if I would be able to garden fruits and vegatables well into winter here.

I'm planning currently on building raised beds to help with the amending of my soil, plus give my dogs normal "paths" for them to run around in instead of running through the gardens.

So, if any have some suggestions for cool weather crops, I would definitely appreciate it.

Also, I want to plant a few fig trees...any idea when the best time for that is?

How about some Spinach or Lettuce, they like cool weather. Alco peas can handle some cold. I would think ground crops like beets or carrots would be ok also. I'm not familiar with zone 7, so wouldn't know when to plant any of these crops.

There are plenty of cool weather crops that would provide lots of late veggies in your climate and which may indeed do best in the fall where you live rather than the hot summers. Cole crops like broccoli and cauliflower, and spinach I guess, and it seems I heard carrots and some other root crops, but it is a good time to plant fruit trees, and perhaps some raspberries or strawberries etc. since you have a cool period for the roots to re-establish, before the coldest weather arrives.
