I'm just wondering if that's a moth!?!? I've been seeing lots of little orange moths lately. <_< BUT, on the other hand, I googled this pic of your "Painted Lady"...

The Painted Ladies catepillars love to eat Hollyhocks. They don't do too much harm so I leave them to their dining. In the past, I've brought them in and put them in my butterfly cage to watch them hatch. They are fritillaries. Here's a cool European butterfly website that shows a lot that I've IDd here in the States. Species Classification of Butterflies ('http://www.butterfly-guide.co.uk/species/')

Even with the cold weather we"ve had the Painted Lady is still hanging in there. Wished I'd had my camera handy yesterday. One landed on my 5 year old DGD arm. She loves butterfly's so she just froze and smiled at it so it would "visit" longer. I have to fight with the digi camera everytime I use it. I'm not very good but at least I can see right away if the pic is blurred and quickly take another one! ^_^ A new digi is going to be DH and my Christmas gift this year----hopefully a user friendly one!!

i think one of the differences to tell which is a moth or butterfly is to look at their antennae....aren't the moths wider and feathery looking? and butterflies are sort of smooth.
