I raised some Chukers this summer and turned them loose after they matured to see how they would do. They were doing really well and were quite tame and fun to have around. Although they did like to dust bath in my flower beds. But I accepted it and decided that it was a good tradeoff for all the enjoyment I was getting by having them around. Well the other day a pickup truck was driving in a field on the otherside of my east property line and a couple of guys jumped out and opened fire on them, killing three. :( Can you believe it? Nothing I can do about it but I would think they would have realized that when the birds ran up to them they would have known they were tame. It's people like that, that give the responsible hunters a bad name.

I guess I spelled it wrong. It's Chuckars with an "a" not an "e". Reckon I'm the idiot. ^_^ Chuckars were introduced from Eurasia into the western U.S. and southwestern Cananda in the 1930's. They are about the size of a Partridge so I guess that would put them in the quail or grouse family.

I really think that people who do things like that need to be in the lowest and hottest part of "H----L". Idiots!!! I think I have heard that name before and figured the birds were something akin to partridge or grouse. Seems they call them that in Scotland , I believe???

You got it MrSeedy, a Chukar is a type of the Partridge family. I agree with the way hunters act these days. Our farm is no longer open to hunters, mainly because of cut wires, garbage, beer cans, damaged trees etc. I still feel sorry for the good hunters that are careful with other peoples property. They end up as the big losers because of some slobs.

I know exactly how you feel..... when I was younger I had a pair of Indian Partridge (chuckars) and some bobwhite quail but they weren't very happy caged though and so we released them in the back fields ... that was before things got built up, farms became developments pretty quickly, anyway, back then the neighborhood hooligans used to go deer hunting from the back of their pick-ups ... they didn't shoot my birdies but they did run over most of them with their trucks while trying to shoot other things :(
