View Full Version : The "r" Word

I guess unless I missed it somewhere else in a different topic, there's that ugly thing starting with "R" heading towards Key West. Seems I have a sense of anxiety every fall now as I hope the best for the folks in the southeast and Florida and the Gulf Coast, but it looks like we have yet another hurricane to worry about, and I can't imagine being in those locations this year. I think I'd surely have a major nervous breakdown with all the worry. Oh well , lets pray for the best possible outcome , though it seems likely no matter where she goes, she'll cause some misery for folks and and the critters of course. I used to live in Key West and it seemed the possibility of hurricanes was a frequent topic. Must have been a slow year that year, since I don't recall even one hurricane "watch" or "warning that year and I moved there in the peak hurricane month of September. I would have been out of luck unless I was able to "hitch" a ride, since I had no car there to evacuate.

I can't believe the tropical storm season we're having this year!! <_< 17 named storms so far this year, and the season still has several weeks to go!! :( I really hate to think about another one period, but another one in the gulf area so soon after Katrina is depressing!! :(

It's hard to believe we still may have to go through at least another two months of this nerve wracking ordeal, til hurricane season is over, hopefully, because sometimes late ones can show up as late as December on occasion. I see parts of Florida near Miami are getting battered , even though they're many miles from the eye, and Key West looks like it may get really clobbered. I feel sory for them and hope the storm most quickly past them!!

My boss' DIL just called. They live about 20 miles from the Gulf outside of Houston. They are on alert status and will know by tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. if they are going to have a mandatory evacuation. If so, they will be heading to the DFW area.

Looks like Key West "dodged the bullet" this time with minimal damage, but since the storm has intensified so fast it's now going on a cat. 3, and I sure hope something makes it fizzle a bit, or at the very least it will hit an unpopulated area as one of the other somewhat recent ones did in Texas. Can't remember where that was?? If it goes south far enough , it will hit northern Mexico and they recenlty got some serious flooding from the last one to hit there, so I hate to see that as well!!

There just isn't a good place for that thing to make landfall!! :P And it may be another Cat 4 when it hits!! :(

How many does this forum have from Texas?
Or anywhere on the Gulf Coast?
Ya'll check in, and let us know if you are in harm's way.
Hopefully, Pensacola will only get a little rain (no rain since
Katrina hit and between 90 and 97 every day). All plants were
windburned, and with no rain, they are now crispy, even with
watering every day.

Although we're not in the path, the weatherman is telling us that with the high pressure system Rita is gonna cause us to have high winds and lots of rain. And we're way inland. We can sure use the rain but I hate to get it at someone else's expense. And they have already started evacuating Katrina refugees still in shelters in Houston to Arkansas. Those people need a break. And Houston had major floods about two years ago and really doesn't need this.

Noe the Hurricane is a catagory 5 and headed for Galveston. I certainly hope it loses strength before it hits anyplace. No one needs this. Connie

Yep, it's shaping up to be pretty ugly. I think that Katrina was a cat 5 at one point then settled down to a 3 - well, if you wanna call that settling down! <_<
I'm praying for the folks in Rita's path! :(

I think it's about time to turn the news off, since the anticipation of Rita's arrival, and the dire predictions of the damage she could do to both property and lives is about to put my anxiety level over the top, and there's absolutely nothing I can do but pray. I guess it's time to have "faith" and hope that my prayers for minimal damage will be answered and for all of us to join in a collective prayer for the best possible outcome!!! Amen!!!!

Thanks Sneezie. Hard to believe it's 100 degrees and sunny right now. But by Saturday we're in trouble. Rain, high winds, tornados, flooding and power outages. Have ya'll seen the traffic gridlock from Houston. Boss' son and wife managed to travel 90 miles in 7 hours. They are trying to get here where (hopefully) everyone can stay safe.

How quickly things can change. Now they say Rita has changed direction just a bit and the DFW area won't see much excitement from her. Maybe 1/2 to 1 inch of rain sometime tomorow. But the folks in East Texas will get it instead. And New Orleans is flooding again as the levee as been breached. Water up to waist high and rising. The bus incident was a bus evacuating the elderly from a nursing home. Having been stuck in traffic for hours the brakes overheated and started a small fire which in turn caused the elderly patients' oxygen tanks to explode. Just horrible. My boss' family arrived here from Houston last night around midnight. It took them 19 hours for what is usually a 4-1/2 to 5 hour drive. But at least they are safe.

I really do feel for the people that are affected by these two stoms recently! ( the explosion that happened on the bus to- someone should have thought that oxygen and the fumes of the gas on the bus really don't mix together well )! :( I'm so sorry that that happened!!! Think this year has been a wake-up call for alot of people around the world ( not just with these storms either )!
My prayers go out to everyone at this hour (reguardless of faith)! God loves us all and He answers prayer ! Stay safe guys and hope to hear from ya soon!!!
Phil :-) ;)

My thoughts are with you all in America who are having to face this horrible force of nature.
<_<
I seen on the news how long the trafic jams are. I was gob-smacked. I have never before in my life seen anything (traffic wise) so bad before! The only kind of traffic jam out in the country would be where you are stuck behind a tractor doing 40kmph down the road.
Why couldn't in that/this kind of situation use both sides of the road?
May you all stay safe and out of harms way.

Today's news tells me that people are evacuating slower that the storm is travelling, since they are running out of gas and the gas stations are closed down due to the storm. Lots of these people are ending up in (The Hilton??) as this hotel is supposed to withstand a storm like this.
My heart bleeds for the people that are in panic !
