It's a sad/happy time of the year. Putting the vegetable bed down for the year. Today we pulled up all the pole bean plants (got a small bag of beans), pulled up some tomato plants (got a binful of green ones for relish/sandwich spread), cut down the other tomatoes to let the big ones ripen, picked about 15 cucumbers, picked all the Gravenstein apples and boxed them, pulled up all the squash vines (got about 8 squash for winter use), pulled up enough carrots and turnips for supper.

Now we're turning the soil over and putting on a good layer of compost and will just let it sit for a couple of weeks. It's a good idea to do that so the birds can fly down and eat the insects and grubs and weed seeds. The worms should be OK as they will immediately burrow down deep inside the soil.

Next and last will probably be in early October when we plant next year's garlic.

All in all a good day's work.

Our vegy garden is waiting for us to put it to bed.
With the light frost things are looking a bit YUCKY!.

It was a good year for matos and cukes. :D

Today I decided to pull up all the carrots to store them as it's getting quite cool at night. What a crappy crop! There weren't enough carrots to fill a small bowl and they're quite small and thin and have the carrot rust fly worm despite my best efforts with the crop cover cloth.

I think the crop cover prevented us from watering them very thoroughly and this kept them small. The soil in the deep bed they were in was nice and deep and loose so that wasn't the problem. Oh well, it was a good try, just didn't work out.

The turnips are doing fine though but aren't nearly as big as the ones I saw in a market today.

maybe it was because of the dry conditions you had this year Mary, better luck next time
