This jay is getting pretty tame now as it comes each day and hangs about the deck.

great photo Kildale. I love the jays, they're so chatty and full of energy. we have so many pigeons eating here now, not even the redwings are coming around.
stellar jays can get very tame, we had one that would come knock on the patio door if the feeder was empty.

What a beautiful bird and great picture. ;)

I think the nuthatch must have watched the catbird eat from my hand because he surprised me by flying next to me in a nearby tree. I happen to be feeding my wibble, so I had a little piece of bread with crunchy peanutbutter on it. ^_^ The little guy scooted down the bark and took it from my hand. Very cool

Now I just need to capture those moments on film. -_-

very nice! Flapjack was released today in the woods. after teaching him to eat berries, nuts, and bugs (he really loved chassing bugs) he was ready to fly free :)

We just had to chase a couple of Stellar Jays out of our hazel nut tree. We love the birds but we love the nuts more.

I love hazelnuts and I've never seen them growing here in this area, but I think they're supposed to be hardy to this zone. I think most likely though the squirrels and blue jays might be the main recipients of the nuts before I ever got them, but then again I feed the critters anyway, so it might save on the food bill. We also seem to be getting the first bumper crop of acorns I've seen on the tree out front in four years and those will provide extra food for the squirrels. I've never seen the blue jays take advantage of the acorns though!!?? Not sure they like acorns. Wish we had the "Stellars" here, but alas not. I guess they'd find it rough going with our native bluejays competing for all the food. Not sure they'd get along!!
