the first year moving back after 10 years of renting our property found us looking at a lovely mangoe tree, a few stragly guarvas and a maccadamia. for the first weeks we watched eack week with greedy eyes as the mangoes and guarvas started rippening only to find a couple of days later that they were all gone! to our surprise the bottom mangoes were chewed at by our native wallabies and the top ones dissapeared! well the next day we drive past our sweet potatoe farming neighbour to find him selling our mangoes on the side of the road! since then we have"borrowed" some of his sweet potatoes from the bottom paddock to feed to our ever hungry horse! :P

Did you ask him about it or let him know that you wanted the future crops for yourself?
Mangoes are one of the best fruits!
Welcome to the board.

he is a lovely bloke an my guess was that it was his workers, but they are good to our horse an throw bad sweetpotatoes overs the fence to Barny(the horse) we now have to fight off the animals cos we didn't get many last year but there are some nice guarvas out now, and they are huge about the size of tennis balls

hi ungreenthumb ~
and, welcome to blossomswap :)
oh my, it sounds as if you will have to wait until next year to enjoy your home-grown mango fruits
 perhaps the anticipation will make them taste all the sweeter??
glad, though, to know that barny could benefit from the "barter" :P
it seems so very exotic to me, to have to worry about wallabies in the garden <_<
the most i have to contend with  are voles and the occasional bunny.

My first thought , when you said your mangos disappeared and before you said you think your neighbor is selling them, was that perhaps you have some giant fruit bats in the neighborhood. I've heard the wreak havoc with fruit farmers in some parts of Australia and they're not welcomed by most gardeners!!

the other animal that mum could think of was rats, living in australia by the beach, tourist destinations, its hard to grow some plants because of the salty and hot wind coming from the beaches. and it wouldn't surprise me at all it the fruit bats were coming and eating mangoes, though i have to point that we had a carpet snake in our roof who had a taste for the bats

I guess that carpet snake might be a welcomed guest , as he's most likely eating the rats as well. Just be sure he doesn't get so big he can eat you!!! Just kidding and I'm not sure, that that species gets large enough to eat people??? How far from Cairns do you live. I'd assume you live in the very northern tropical part of Australia??Queensland perhaps??

firstly wanted to say hello and welcome,
Mangoes have caused some major arguments over the years, but how sweet are they to eat, i could eat them alllllll day.
That's not very nice of your neighbour but you may be able to get some fresh veg out of the next crop if you barter. Not a bad idea considering the price of veges these days.
I have problem with my mangoes going missing as well, but not by greedy neighbours but by uninvited cattle jumping my fence. (bastards) I live in a very rural town so the cows just roam free in the streets (there are 4 ) so we dont always get many.
We also get the infamous wallabie and eastern greys in the yard, i love walking out and seeing them eating the grass, we also have the odd brown snake but mainly pythons (they are harmless).
I'm currently trying to grow pawpaws they seem to be going well, so we will see how we go.
Anyway hope you get some mangoes from the next crop and enjoy
:D  ;) :P :D
