I have to fess up and say , my first try at cauliflower was a dismal failure, as the heads were all furry and funny looking and not very tasty?? I supposedly had the "selfblanching" variety that would have some upper leaves to shade the developing flower heads, but they looked furry or fuzzy anyway and sort of an off white with a tinge of yellow. Not very appetizing, but our summers are a bit hot to grow good cauliflower,, and our fall was hot and dry as well that year, so even a fall planting wouldn't have been good. I do think those "commercial" growers have some tricks for producing those perfectly smooth and white heads , and the average home vegetable garden enthusiast may have trouble getting those perfect "heads"!! Used to be the older varieties of cauliflower had to have the larger lower leaves below the flower heads raised and tied up over the developing flower heads to keep the sun from turning the heads green ( which of course is a normal response to sunlight), and that was called "blanching".

Just goes to prove my point. Whenever I try to be thoughtful I get it wrong and all that effort was for nothing so I have stopped being thoughtful and get bawled out for that. But at least it's less effort on my part.

 Yeah Mr. Seedy my Dad used to pull the leaves up round our cauliflower when I was little and at home. His gardens were fabulous lookin things. He could grow anything!!!!!................He`d grow the garden part of it, and my Mom would grow the gorgeous flowers!!!!
