I'm thinking of adopting this fellow- he's an 8 month old boxer mix....
I want a dog that is good for hiking and climbing mountains and all things outdoors- Sasha is a house dog and isnt good in the woods...she gets tired to easy and prefers to stay home but we think a buddy would be good for her too. So having never had a boxer before I need to know from others expiriences-
Boxers- Do they get along with other dogs well? Do they like swimming/water? are they athletic? Are they easy to train?

I have a friend who raises and loves purebred boxers. Be forewarned - although they're wonderful dogs with quirky personalities they are INCREDIBLY hyper and old age doesn't even calm them down.
I left a message on the friend's answering machine and if I learn anything else important about boxers I'll post again later.

Yeah we want a high energy dog! I was reading about the boxer on line and it is said:
Developed in Germany to serve the multiple purposes of guard, working and escort dog, the Boxer is a strong, boisterous, active dog with a very positive personality. It is a very serviceable and utilitarian breed. To provide the necessary speed, dexterity and jumping ability required for the many arduous hikes, riding expeditions, plus varied police and military duty which characterised his working life, the Boxer needed to be an elegant but substantial dog of great power. This legacy has left us with a sound, no-frills animal, whose functional clean-cut lines are very pleasing to the eye.
Which would be perfect for us!

Could you bring him for a trial visit, like for a weekend, to see how he and Sasha get along? Some dogs get along fine and others really prefer to be only doggies! ;)

I just found out that they don't swim very well, in fact their hind ends sink like stones. They just don't have enough fat in their rears (don't you wish we ALL had that problem, lol) and they almost stand up in the water with the rears sunk and the fronts floating. Does that make sense to you, can you picture what I'm talking about?

Awww....what a cutie.
boxers are great high energy family dogs. Make sure you're gonna have enough time to play/exercises him every day; not just when you're going for a hike. Otherwise you're gonna come home to a house that's been torn apart. :D

I have my son's pure bred brindle boxer living with me. He has been here for months now. I have another dog that's 13 and they get along fine. He's fit in from day 1. He is very protective of my yard but I've only had one problem with him. He just doesn't like my neighbor. He doen't want her near the yard. But with everyone else he's fine. He just likes to jump on people wanting attention. He's such a loving dog and climbs on me to give me a hug. I've never taken him swimming but he has plenty of energy. He's 4. I'd say go for it. I just love Buster. Here they are . I took this the other day to test my camera. Connie

You want my opinion? I don't have one having never owned a dog. The only dog I know of that would meet your requirements is a Welsh border collie. Very bright and bags of energy.

Terrier. I just heard from a hiking friend who has one mixed like that and he says his dog hikes two miles just to get started and is endless energy on the trail. Iwill be clicker training him. Oh its gonna be so fun! I've got to get lots of treats, puppy chow, booties, maybe a dog sweater? New toys, of course he will sleep with us  oh...i do hope sashsa doesnt get jeolous!

You want my opinion? I've never owned a dog so it doesn't count for much. The only dog I know of that would meet your requirements is a Welsh border collie. Very bright, loyal, friendly and bags of energy.
I know what a boxer looks like, but that's about it.
