I got a tomato out of the garden yesterday that was just about perfect for eating. When I cut it open I thought it was rotten. On closer observation I saw very small leaves. It appears as though the seeds are germinating inside the tomato. Has anyone ever heard of this before?? Also how is it possible to have green leaves?? I tried to photograph them but my camera can't come up with a clear picture. I never ever heard of this but of course I'm not a tomato expert, nor do I raise that many. It sure is the wierdest thing I've ever seen.

I've seen that in a few tropical fruit from time to time, when I peeled them and removed the pits on avacados and mangos. Seems they're eager to start some new descendants.

donybee! The exact same thing happened to me! I took a few of the sprouting seeds and put them into pots, to see what would happen. I, too, thought that was very strange!!!

That's incredible. I knew that is was the best way to germinate tomato seeds, but I had never seen it inside a tomato

Yup - I've had it happen. Has only happened when the fruit is over-ripe and the temps are hot enough for germination.

I could understand maybe if the tomato was overripe but this one was just turning red. It could be because of the hot dry summer conditions this year but it was still odd.

Oh yes. By the way, my tomato was "store bought". Nothing weird about it until I looked inside.

George Carlin always said he never ate tomatoes because when he cut one open he always thought "something has gone afoul inside the tomatoe!" Of course, he enjoyed some other types of plants that might have altered his perception!!
