The plant these berrys came from shrivelled up and died down (it'll grow back next year) before the seeds were ready so I kept them, and they are now red and soft.

Any idea what the next stage is before I plant or distribute them to friends?

Thats' really a quandry Rich for plant that have sort of a berry around them, since I think in some cases the rotting fruit around the seeds may play a part in the germination or growth of the sprouting seeds, but in general in might be safe to remove as much as possible of the fleshy part.

If they're anything like clivia berries, you leave the flesh on until just prior to planting... then rub between a couple of paper towels to remove the outer skin and the pulp...

I think you'd plant them "fresh" and not store them.... JMHO!

I think you're right clams about leaving the flesh on some types of seeds , since they do need to be planted quite fresh and the fleshy covering keeps the seeds inside from getting too dry until they're planted. It's funny that in the case of some seeds, it rule of thumb for storing seeds , is the drier the better, but for others that don't store well or for long, they can't stand hardly any drying !!
