It's getting out of control! I heard too many ugly things on the radio today about the hurricane's devastation... These people don't need more grief!

from here on the coast of n.c., i'm giving her the evil eye, trying to force her to turn out to sea

Maybe I'm an optimist, but I have a feeling Ophelia won't be too bad, and I pray I'm right about her!!

I have been thinking of Decompost, since it got past the Fl. coast.
Hope it stays off the coast like it has been, so that only the bands
come ashore--that's bad enough.
After the winds will be a good time to go pick up shells again! Think
of all the good ones that will have washed ashore. I got a horseshoe crab (already dead)at Edisto beach once! Put it in a plastic bag, fastened it to the bumper for the trip home and then buried it, until the smell went away.
I still have it and that was in the seventies.

Wow!!!! Someone who REMEMBERS the 70's!!!! <_< <_< <_<
It's kinda blurry to me
DO shows us the shells you gather if you DO get some! We're shell hounds here! :D

In our part of Florida, we don't get many big shells on our beach. We have sand that is as white as snow, but only small angel wing shells mostly, not much over the size of a quarter. The things I got at Edisto, was when DH was stationed in Charleston, SC with the Navy. I am a packrat and still have EVERYTHING I ever found. LOL I was just remembering the shells we saw on this forum before. They get large conch shells in the Carolinas.

Forgot to say--Yes, I remember the 70's--As my daughter says
"I am OLD"! We celebrated our 49th anniversery in August. She will be 40 this year and I rememd her that she is getting older too LOL

Hope it stays off the coast
 aw, nona, that's so very kind and thoughtful of you, you're a doll, thank you
dh and i spent a good part of the day today sort of "pre-preparing" ~ just getting sorted and organized.
( getting my plants into sheltered spots, as we will almost certainly get a windy day, at the least)
our area is currently under a hurricane watch, and the forecasts right now don't really look great,
but tomorrow should give us a better picture, and then we'll make some decisions
we are still hopeful that this storm will not affect anyone, and stay at sea,
adding my hopes and prayers to all of yours.

decompost--I've been thinking of you every day when I check on Ophelia's projected path! -_- I keep hoping it will just brush the coast and not make a direct hit!! The winds and beach erosion are bad enough but that's better than having her actually make landfall! I hope she misses you by miles and miles! :D You're in my thoughts and prayers!

Batten down the hatches and please.... get to a safe 'n sound spot!!! Check in when possible to keep us posted!!!! We WORRY! <_<

I hate to be "rude" to a lady , but it seems Ophelia has just been running around in a big circle and is almost back to where she was two days ago. Get lost Ophelia!!! The latest computer models or most of them sayk, she may just move out to sea, and what a blessing that would be.

September 12th, 2005, 04:28 PM
wellllllll. . . she is certainly turning out to be quite the dizzy "w"itch, isn't she??
seems to me that she is something of a drama queen ~
and with a name like ophelia, what else could we have expected?? ;)
the forecast path changes from day to day (and sometimes from hour to hour)
sometimes we're nearly in the center, and sometimes we're barely in at the edge.
mainly, we are still hopeful that ophelia will pass off-shore of us,
(and off-shore of the entire east coast, for that matter)
the local schools are already closed, they will be using those for shelters, if necessary.
as yet, we've not had the first drop of rain -
but we have been having gale force winds, and very gusty conditions since sat. evening.
we are pretty well prepared, and if it looks like she's going to come in nearby, we will leave the island.

Everyone blow real hard to the right!  I hope she finally just weakens. I wouldn't mind some rain from her though. Stay safe Decompost and anyone else who could possibly be hit. ;)

I didn't realize decompost , that you live on one of the "barrier" islands there, and I guess that's the last place to be during a really bad hurricane. You're not far above sea level on those islands are you?? I've heard they're really beautiful though and you probably rarely get frosts like interior parts of NC can sometimes get during the winter when there's those rare "cold snaps". I'd imagine some of your tropicals could almost stay out all winter there??? Do stay safe!!

   okay ~ it's been sort of a looooooong day <_< and the next few are gonna be lotsa fun too
thanks to you all for your good thoughts  , and for giving ophelia the blow
and rich, thanks for all the suction from the other side of the atlantic.
it all amounted to just enough. and as you can see from the radar image,
'clams caught the moment when ophelia was passing just barely off-shore from us.
in fact, the map actually indicates "long beach" which was previously the name of our town.
our island runs east-west just under the mainland, with a south-facing beach,
and thankfully, because the eye of the storm did stay east of us,
the wind (80-85mph at times) was primarily blowing out of the north and off-shore,
which helps to minimize the beach erosion.
in short;
it hooted like a beast, starting at about 2:30am, and it went on and on . . .and on . . . and on. . .
rainfall amounted to around 15".
we lost our electricity at about 7am and it was restored about 13 hrs later.
soooo, anyway, we're still here, and we're safe, despite ophelia's gusty efforts  ,
but we do have a lot of cleaning up to do. we are grateful that there is no damage to our home,
though a number of limbs did come down, including one on the glasshouse :( ,
so here we go again, dh will have to pick up another panel to repair it this weekend,
and i will have to pick tempered glass crumbles out of the orchid plants.

I'm so relieved to hear you came through the storm in relatively good condition, but I'm sorry about your glass house, and am happy it was only one pannel broken. How'd your outdoor garden come through?? I hope not much damage there either. Now, if that very stubborn Ophelia would just get her butt moving!!!

Oh good, does that mean I can breath out now?
Glad your home wasn't damaged and the beach stayed to fight another day. We're losing our beaches here, not due to hurricanes, but due to incompetence of engineers.

Glad you are safe!!!! Sorry about the broken glass.
If you do hypertufa save some to put in a tufa ball, and
make a 'geode'. I have seen photos
of one that was done. It looked great.
You know--when life hand you lemons-I mean glass-make
something with it!

WOOOHOOOOOO!!!! They've MADE IT!
Ellie... you rascal.. you didn't evacuate!!!!!!! We were sure you would have. What an ordeal to go thru especially when the stubborn thing refused to move on but rather just hang out at your place! Sorry to hear about the glass house as well and leave it to Nonacook to come up with what sounds like an UNBELIEVABLE IDEA for that geode thingy!!! I'd like to SEE one of those things! :D
Glad you're safe 'n sound! :D

I'm so happy that all is well and you and yours are safe. It's been such a long hurricane season and we have been hit everywhere it seems. So many people have said that it is just a little storm---but, what they don't realize is that even a cat. 1 can batter a coast severely, especially if the stupid thing just sits around like you're going to invite it to dinner! Again, I'm so glad that the damage was minimum and all are safe.

Hey, so glad you took sometime to post and let everyone know that things are ok with ya! ( alot of people had us doing some unusual things as that storm was getting closer to ya --- "Blowing to the right - side " - think that was one of them!
Anyway, its glad to hear that things are ok ( sorta ) with you! You have my thoughts and prayers ( not just for you , but for everyone in the area )!
Stay safe and be careful when you begin to clean things up to!!!
Phil :-) ;)
