I must say that last one is a "dazzler" and I want it!! I have to say however, the one I bought with so much promise, seemed to be very difficult to maintain the original almost black color with the bright pink interior on the leaves, and though it seemed to be getting the best color back, with the shorter daylight and less sun now in the late afternoon, it's lost most of the best coloring it had originally. I think next year I may try it in almost full sun to see if I get the coloring I want!!
It seems funny how much some varieties seem to demand certain light conditions to maintain their best coloring, but I've found that's true for many different plants that are grown for the foliage color.

B) The name of Coleus # 3 is...(drum roll......).....'Outdoor Coleus'!!!!!! That's it. My fave nursery gets 'em special and THAT is the name that comes with every variety. Total bum-merrrrr!
Boo, I never have problems with the general public and my plants (rarely), and if someone would like a cutting, I snip 'em a few. All I ask them is to never break a cutting off, always use shears.

<_< -_- how are we all suppose to go out and find that amazing looking coleus with just 'Outdoor Coleus'? We'd get very strange looks from the workers at the nursery.
Gonzer is just a big teeeeaaase! :(

It really gets me when I'm shopping at Lowes and find a plant I admire in the tropical section, and sometimes one I'm not familiar with. Of course the plant tag just says "Tropical Foliage Plant" with some growing directions , but that doesn't exactly narrow down the exact name for it. I still think there should be some kind of national effort on the part of all us "indoor" plant enthusiasts to urge those darn tropical plant suppliers to put the right names on things. I think with our dollars spent we have the right to "demand" the proper names for things!!! Really bugs me , when I can't find the name for something , which is one reason that I like to help folks find those "mystery names"!! Isn't easy though , even with a picture sometimes, and no name to go on!!

MrS on the whole I would agree with you, but there have been times where I will see a plant...with the usual 'tropical, likes sun' tag for just a few dollars BUT I know it is a really good cultivar worth way more....course I buy a few then
But I am with you on trying to always find names for plants that are lil nameless orphans.......
Miss Mollusk, I will be sure if and when the time comes to send the authorities snooping in the wise ones direction. Will the toe tag have pictures??????

I HAD some of those yellow beauties last year. I tried to save some last fall and rooted some cuttings. They took off well, but all of the coleus of that color died over the winter in the house. did manage to keep another coleus of a different color alive, and they are doing great again this year. I need to get back to the greenhouse where I bought them. They had lots of them, and when I walked in and saw how beautiful that mass of color was I had to have them.
