My darling 'puter has suddenly been giving me a message when I turn it on and everything has booted up. When my desktop appears so does a message saying Outlook Express wants to free up disk space by consolidating my emails or some such.
a. I've run the defrag analyzing thing and it says I don't need to defrag.
b. My emails are all stored on a server somewhere, not on my hard drive.
c. I'm using only about 30-40% of my hard drive for everything, I've plenty of RAM, so what is this blasted thing talking about?
I've disabled Outlook and OE in from the control panel. I suspect this is coming from one of my email providers, either ATT/Yahoo or Hotmail. Am I getting warm?
I don't use either Outlook or OE as my email originator or creator or whatever you call it. So how can I get rid of this annoying message and prevent it from popping up every time I start up?

when was the last time you updated windows??? xp is now on service pack 3.

even if you don't use oe, let the updates for it be done. i know - makes no sense if you don't use it. thing is, you can't really get rid of it and it's tied into other ms things, so update it anyhoo, just so all bases are covered and all back-doors are firmly closed ;)

also, i'd run virus scans...could be something on there trying to exploit one of the numerous vulnerabilities that exists in oe...

Mine was doing that to me and I'd just click on "cancel" all the time. Once I accidentally clicked on the wrong space and it went ahead and did the task. It didn't seem to make any difference to my Outlook page at all but at least now it doesn't pop up with that message every time. Maybe you should just let it do what it wants and be done with.

I scan daily, full scan. I downloaded sp3 about a month ago. I may just say "yes" and be done with it--although I can't help but be suspicious as it wasn't too long ago I got mystery messages from a couple of my freemail accounts asking to confirm password changes I never authorised. So I went the secure route to that provider and changed my passwords anyway. Now it seems like within two weeks I get this OE message. Hmmm...

I have had that message from time to time, for a long time now, have always said yes, and never had any problems with it.

Well, maybe next time I'll say "yes". We'll see. Still like to get rid of it. But thank you for your reassurances. If my 'puter crashes I'm blaming it on You People.

Say "Yes". It won't hurt anything. It just consolidates things and then it's done. Nothing will change. If you DON'T let it happen, you may end up with problems in the long run.

I get it too and just cancel as I delete most of my mail every day. (Mostly spam)
