Does anyone make their own paper? A relative expressed an interest in it so I was thinking for Christmas I would buy her a kit but I'm not sure which one would be good or if there are any great books out there?

Those of you that dabble in it have any suggestions?

:sleazy: counterfeit

Ok, I'll be a little more specific...um, paper as stationary or cards NOT fake money or a leaf to wipe your butt with. :p but thanks for the suggestions

 Leave it to Caz....

There are lots of ways to make paper, even some with pressed flowers. Do you have a good local craft supply store? They usually sell good starter kits.

Yeah, I know where to buy kits but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good one vs. crap. :)

Hi Boo - yes, I make paper, and I started off with a children's kit (PAPERMAKERS RECYCLING KIT, made in New Zealand) which provided everything to get me going :

Do you have a National Geographic shop, or something similar, in your area?
But any good craft shop will offer you a worthwhile kit.

Small deckle and mould (aka deckle and frame) They described it as a "sandwich" for
making paper ! **

Eight reusable drying boards of thick cardboard

A sponge

Instructions, helpful hints.

NOTE: You definitely need the use of a blender, preferably one that is not
used for other household cooking needs!-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This first set was enough to make small sheets of notepaper, gift bags, envelopes,
and since then I have bought a somewhat larger deckle and mould and felt
drying sheets and one or two books on how to (lots of them about) I
learned a lot from a papermaking class, which I regretfully had to leave.
Lots of ideas from papermakers online.

** Quote:
The deckled, or feathered, edge of a sheet of handmade paper results from the papermaking process. To make a sheet of handmade paper, we use a mould and deckle set. The mould is a wood frame covered with special papermaking screen. The deckle is an open frame that is placed on top of the mould. The papermaker places the two pieces together and drags them through a vat of pulp, catching the fibers evenly on the screen. The deckle is removed and the sheet of paper is transferred from the mould for pressing.

Thanks. :) I'll have to take a look.

I found this one on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/Paper-Making-kit-for-successful-papermaking_W0QQitemZ250301152152QQcmdZViewItem?ha sh=item250301152152&_trkparms=72:1222|39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 but I wasn't sure if the cost was a norm.

Prices have soared since I bought my equipment, but there are actual
sets on offer still (small deckles) for school use. Quite good for starting out
and experimenting with. It took me a while, even with small tools, to get the desired thickness of the
paper and to be able to tip it out all in one piece.

This site offers a price calculator for their various sets- for instance the
"combo" with two admittedly small units.
