View Full Version : Mighty Putty

Speaking of home improvements, I was looking for something like the Mighty Putty on that stupid infomercial. I figured he's got to be ripping people off. Turns out that JB Waterweld is the same thing and our hardware store here carries it. I have a leak under the toilet tank. Has anyone tried either of these products? I won't be needing to pull a 80,000-lb. tractor trailer, but I'm hoping this stuff will seal the leak.

I'm going to buy some of the JB Waterweld on the way home from work, Mainegal. I'll let you know whether it's any good once I use it.

Mighty Putty. Instead of buying it, put your money directly into the toilet & flush. Saves time :)
JB Waterweld is ok for some types of repairs. I've used it to seal a bullet hole in a fiberglass boat hull. May not adhere very well to porcelain.

Blue, Use that closeup feature on your camera and post some pics showing where the toilet is leaking. (not while your using it)

They sell the stuff to repair porcelain. I used it on the powder room sink. I dropped a bottle and it put a small hole in the bowl. It has held for 10 years. It is a two part mix expoxy.

You didn't read the site, did you?

What does it bond to?
Virtually any combination of iron, steel, copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, pewter, porcelain, ceramic, marble, glass, PVC & ABS, concrete, fiberglass, wood, fabric, paper -- just about any porous and non-porous material.

I know exactly where the leak is (so no pics of the tank or me). The leak is at the ballcock. I may just have to tighten the ballcock locknut or replace the washer, but if it's more than that, out comes the JB Waterweld.

Thanks for the replies!

Now I get it, ballcock connector not the actual ballcock. Well you need to go to CT and buy a new part. I had to do that two years ago. Then you turn off your water, flush the toilet so the cistern empties, still stick a bowl of something underneath to collect the excess water. Remove the old ball cock connector, put in the new, adjust the ballcock and voila you're back in business. If you want to just try to repair it, you could try plumber's goop. :)

Nope I did it myself, no son around. It's quite simple that's why I could do it. The worst part was loosening the nut underneath the tank. It's awkward to get at on mine.

There's an actual product at Canadian Tire called Goop. I've used various types. I've even repaired a pair of the grands running shoes when he tripped and pulled off a bit of the sole from the upper at the toe. It's great stuff. :)

From putty to toilets to brooms to Caz's "chest". :um:

Ok, so the saga continues. I still haven't fixed the darn thing. Turns out it's not the ball cock (connection), it's the area between the tank and bowl, the leak is coming through the seal between the tank and bowl, so the "spud washer" has to be replaced. Gonna work on that this weekend.

Here's a video of what I had to replace in mine. You get the complete kit plus ballcock at CT. If you're going to go to all the trouble of replacing the spud washer you should think about doing a full replacement. It's not expensive. Like I said before, the biggest problem I had was in loosening the nut under the tank as my toilet is in a confined space and my limbs aren't as flexible as they used to be.

The spud washer is just above where you remove the nut outside the tank but it's inside the tank. If you just replace the washer, your assuming that the original part that the ballcock attaches to is in good condition. Once you remove the nut you'll see the 'section' it's attached to. If it were me, I'd replace the whole thing. The reason being that if your spud washer is done then the rest will follow. So, as you have the thing apart you may as well replace the whole unit plus ballcock as you probably don't want to do this again in a few weeks or months even. :)

Caaaaaaz! Get in here and explain it better, only if you agree with me, of course.
