I was looking through the garden watchdog for some good plant mail-order places and came across Weird Dudes Plant Zoo. It got very high ratings and they had a few interesting plants there, a lot are on sale 50% off! At first I thought the shipping was a little high but, after ordering 7 quart sized plants and one gallon sized plant I didn't think 14.00 was too bad. Anyone ever try this place?

They sent the wrong Hosta to me and then they told me I did not know what I was talking about. They said it was a young plant and that is why it looked different. If I was not happy after one year they would replace. It was the wrong hosta, I did not contact them again. I think they stopped selling hosta which was good because they did not have a clue.
That was 5 years ago I have not dealt with them since.

I sometimes think it's the "luck of the draw" , but I do check the garden watchdog thing lately to see if most of the ratings are good. I think I ordered from Stokes Tropicals just once and that was a horrible disaster or sorts, with cannas arriving "dead", tiny plants , when they could have been a bit bigger considering the price, and plants not sent til the following fall, when they are supposed to be planted in the spring of course. I've not ordered from them again, but still am tempted to try them again evey time I look at their "glitzy" catalog with so many unusual and rare tropicals. I hope I continue to resist, though I'm considering some new sources, and might find them equally disappointing!!

Shipping is or has been my biggest complaint. If some of these places would have fair shipping prices they would sell alot more. I hate it when I pay 8.95 for shipping and when I get the package it has a 3.85 stamp on it. At that rate I can see why they have a sale.

Update on this place:
I placed my order on 9/1/05, recieved a confirmation e-mail, they sent the plants out on 9/6/05 with another e-mail to notify me they were coming, and I recieved the plants today 9/8/05. ;)
I am very pleased with what I got from them also. All healthy plants, like they came right from the nursery, one was a little squished, but sometimes that happens in shipping. Now lets see if they all grow. ;) :D
I got some interesting plants,
Anthyllis vulneraria (kidney vetch)
Campanula punctata 'Little Punky'
Edrianthus tenuifolious (grassy bells)
Origanum rotundifolium (round leaf oregano)
Penstemon linarioides ssp. coloradoensis (beard tongue or pineleaf penstemon purple)
Penstemon pinifolius 'Mercea Yellow'
Tetrameria nervosa (hardy green shrimp plant)
Zauschneria garettii ssp. garrettii 'orange carpet' :D

Big turnaround for this place now!!! After the plants being in the ground for two weeks, I already lost two of them! Completely dry and brown! I called the place and no one answered, when I did get a return call, within an hour, the person on the phone was not very nice. Needless to say I will not be getting replacements for the dead plants. I took care of them diligently, so I don't think I did anything wrong on my part. What do you all think? Should they be replaced if they didn't survive more than two weeks in the garden? I'm very upset about this, they were the two plants I wanted the most out of the whole group. :(

I am sorry I did not respond to you Ginny before you placed the order with them. Which two did not survive?
I will repeat stay away from them!!!! They just are not good business people. My experience with them was not good.

Another lesson learned the hard way. Thanks for trying to warn me Aud. ;) What I really didn't like was the manner in which that man was speaking to me on the phone. I wonder if it was the weird dude? In any case, I know why he's called that now.
It was the two penstemons that I ordered, but to be perfectly honest, none of the other plants are doing that well except for the ornamental oregano. -_-

So sorry to read your post and that you got kinda upset, I ordered a couple of plants from there and they are doing just fine and the service that I received was ok as well. Maybe it has something to do with who's working in that department that day or something! <just a thought>
As for the plants to be replaced or not. Did you receive a guarantee with your order ? If so, they should follow it and you should get them replaced!
Thats my opinion!
Good Luck!
Phil :-) ;)
