It was chilly this morning and I like the cool down.

The best part is all them bratty teenagers at work go back to school. :D :D :D
Yep Yep here comes fall.

Saw the school bus this morning and realized that school was now in session. I'm sure glad to be retired or I would have been in school waiting for those brats to arrive.

I hate it when the school term starts. There's so much more traffic on the road, then you get the mothers who drop the kids off then go shopping in Canterbury with a long queue of traffic following them at 40 mph in a 60 zone.

I have to leave for work 15 minutes earlier during term time, and even then I'm sometimes late.

Nice cool off this morning :D , it's still very breezy out there, but it feels wonderful! I get to go back to school with all the little brats in a few days. -_- We start on the 7th.

I must say I haven't seen such perfect weather all summer , and though Labor Day is the "unofficial" end to summer here, as far as I'm concerned , this weather is "perfect" summer weather, though Labor Day isn't til next week. It started cool yesterday but very sunny and with low humidities again yesterday, and finally reached maybe 80 late in the day. It was also cool enough over night for a more restful night's sleep. Looking for more of the same today , though I think it's supposed to get cooler the next several days. I've been watching CNN so much lately, I'm totally missing my local weather report!! I must say , it seems afer a long summer of such spotty rains, that any rain we get seems to be almost an illusion as the ground just looks drier and drier this time of year, only a day after agood downpour, I doubt any moisture extends more than six inches below the surface and the subsoil is bone dry!!

Nice and cool here now and perfect fall weather coming up for the weekend. After our rain the other day, 2.8 inches, I went to transplant some plants and found the ground dry about 2 inches down. Had to water the transplants big time.

I think most of those "rains" we're getting as quick downpours , just run off as fast as they come down and don't really soak anything very well. Nothing for a slow , long, overnight soaker that really penetrates that soil to do some good!!

After all those "unusually" warm nights we were getting in July, we went back to cooler nights , which are sort of the norm , even in summer here, and now mornings are almost feelinga bit too fall like for me. My furnace just came on, after opening one door for some fresh air this morning. Afternoons have been perfect though, but still we do need "some" rain. It just seems we've not had a normal amount of summer rain for five or six years now. Talk about a "long term" drought!!! I'm still amazed the trees keep growing despite the constant drought here, and most even look almost healthyi!! I do wish we'd get regular rains here, but I'm not sure such a thing as "regular" ever applies to Michigan weather!! It's 55 this morning, but I guess I should feel fortunate it's not one of those somewhat common situations of worrying about "early" frost.

I think I was one of those "teen" brats once, though a very "square" one. It wasn't til later I became a bit "unruly". I know there are lots of great "teens" out there whisper, and we know theyr'e not the exceptions. Anyway, it seems most of the kids around here are pretty good and don't cause many problems for me, but it seems that," bang", the second school gets out , those kids have so much pent up energy, when they get home from school, that this neighborhood sounds like a "circus" or something. No finding any peace and quiet in this neighborhood once school is out for the day. Anyway after feeling like it would get quite warm again yesterday during the morning hours, it seems a very "chilly" cold front blew in with the shifting winds, and I don't think it was 70 outside in late afternoon, and very windy on top of that. I'm afraid to check the thermometer this morning, as it feels very chilly out there. Weather Channel says it's only 48, and that's not freezing, but I can hear my tropicals teeth rattling with that chilly night! A few odd nights won't hurt them with those lows, but when those lows become an every night thing, it's time for the tropicals to come back indoors. Soon I'll have a jungle indoors again for the next nine months!!

MrSeedy
September 5th, 2005, 08:48 AM
I can't quite describe the "odd" feel of the weather yesterday. I guess in some sense it was sort of a typcial "fall" day, with the sun very warm to almost hot in the sun, but when I'd go in the shade I almost felt I could put on a light jacket with the breeze, somewhat low temperatures , and very low humidity. I guess it's a case of how much cooler air can feel when it's dry, and I often remember walking a fast clip in California on sunny days when it could be in the eighties and still only feel like it was in the low seventies. Sure is a contrast between shade and sunny locations. Anyway , with the dry air again and clear skies overnight the temperatures dropped like a rock in the late evening and it was chilly this morning again. I guess we'll not see even one more 70 temperature for an overnight low here, til next summer, and that seems a long way in the future, and now I can look
"forward" to those -10 to -20 overnight lows of January. Not looking forward to that!!! Right now the sun has been up for a couple of hours and it's still only 52. Must have been in the forties overnight again.

MrSeedy
September 6th, 2005, 07:36 AM
I think with our somewhat cooler than normal summer last year grindle, we didn't get our hottest weather til September. I wondered then where the heat had been all summer, but this year we've had no shortage of hot sunny weather, and I'll take just a little cooler for now. I hope we indeed get what we call "Indian Summer" for a change , as we've not seen a real Indian Summer here for years.
I'm never so happy as when we can get to December here and still see the odd annual still blooming around here, but most years lately we've already had an early blizzard and some very cold weather by then. Anyway it was a bit warmer overnight last night , so I can still put off the annual "moving indoors" of all my from outdoors to indoors!! It's supposed to be warm and sunny and in the eighties today which would qualify as warmer than average temperatures. OOOOps, I don't get it , but the Weather Channel on-line says it's only 48 outdoors this morning , but another local TV channel said it's in the low 60's here, and I'd go with that temperature!!

I can't imagine more beautiful weather , than we've had lately , and it was again about 80F and sunny with low humidities, and a nice breeze yesterday. Perfectly comfortable unless you're doing something quite strenuous!! I must say though I can work up a very temporary sweat just dragging my heavy hose around , which just goes to show how badly we could use some rain!!! It's been over ten days since we've had a drop of rain , and after a dry summer , that's much too long to go between rains. Everything is bone dry lately, the day after it gets a good soak!!

Another bright sunny day. In the 80's again and no rain in sight. I can't water any more after the almost 400.00 water bill from the last three months, and I barely watered too! The gardens are still hanging on by a thread, I don't know how? For some reason we have lots of grasshoppers around too, all sizes.

MrSeedy
September 9th, 2005, 07:02 AM
Oh my , Ginny, I thought my water bills were high , but then again we do have what we consider an endless cheap supply of water here near the Great Lakes. It's only the special "assessment" for improving the entire storm drain and sewage systems here , that's doubled our average water bills the past couple of years, and before that I'd guess they were pretty cheap , running maybe $90 to $100 for a very dry summer, if you have lots of outdoor watering to do. I'm afraid however, that my bill may obver $200 for the summer as it was last year after a "wet" start!
Meanwhile those early clouds yesterday morning , just dropped a "trace" of rain so those clouds were of no benefit whatsoever! It finally warmed to the seventies , but temperatures dropped in the afternoon with winds off the lake. Chilly this morning at 55.

MrSeedy
September 11th, 2005, 07:45 AM
I just can't figure out why our temperatures are dropping so fast at sundown, and it's only 50 right now. It wasn't terribly hot yesterday though despite the forcast for a high in the eighties as our wind was off the lake in the late afternoon. I'm still hoping for some badly needed rain though none is in the forcast for the next several days, and it's going to get hot for a couple of days. I'm just crossing my fingers, that those lows won't start going into the forties for a few weeks, since it means nearly all my tropicals will have to come back indoors. The cool weather won't kill them, but for some the sudden adjustment to indoors with warmer nights again might put them into shock! I'd not recommend leaving tropicals outdoors once the lows start running in the forties regularly, since it makes the adjustment back to warmer conditions indoors much more difficult. In the case of those you want to go dormant , it probably might be a good "thing" to force them into dormancy.

It was supposed to be in the upper eighties yesterday afternoon, but again with the low humidity , it felt nowhere near that, though it was probably cooler than that.
I must say though, it seems like that sun is really "hot" still and that seems a bit unusual for mid Septemeber around here, as usually the sun strength seems to be getting weaker this time of the year. Cooled off fine for sleeping though again last night. Very dry of course but what else is new this year!!

MrSeedy
September 13th, 2005, 08:20 AM
Yesterday, I'm not sure if we didn't hit a record high for the day. It was hot , but with the low humidity it was somewhat tollerable. I checked and the humidity was supposed to be about 36% , which makes even hot days feel much cooler, without any heat index to speak of. Of course all the wind , strong sun, and very low humidity meant that that parched ground lost moisture even quicker, and I resorted to the very wasteful use of a sprinkler yesterday, so I could give areas a long soak without standing there for hours. Usually I just "spot" water to avoid wasting so much water that blows on windy days to areas I don't even care to be watered, like the lawn. I don't water my lawn anymore or my water bill would be three or four hundred dollars a month possibly! Now with another hot day in store for my garden again today, the areas that were just watered will probably be bone dry by the end of the day. It almost seems hopeless trying to keep anything moist this year!!! I slept on top of the covers last night , since it didn't even cool down indoors overnight!! Oh well, normal highs are expected in the next day or so, but it should still be warm by September standards with highs in the seventies, and cool nights for sleeping.

Looks like we may make a new record for the driest September on record here, if the rain situation doesn't improve. There are clouds to our west, but the weatherman said only a 50% chance of rain, and with those percentages , I doubt we'll get much rain , if any!! It will be two and a half weeks , since we had any measureabel rain here. Oh well , at least temperatures should be near normal in the next few days and comfortable again. It's been downright hot lately, but with lower humidities!!

MrSeedy
September 15th, 2005, 07:23 AM
Even though a cool front comming through yesterday promised some badly needed rain, I doubt we got a tenth of an inch total. I'd put the sprinkler on the back shade garden and figuring the rain would amount to zilch, I just left the sprinkler on, but forgot to even turn it off til I'd gotten in bed for the night , at which time I had to get up out of bed and go outdoors to turn it off. No sense in making that huge water bill this summer even worse!! I didn't mention earlier , but despite an effort to keep that "dry shade " situation somewhat moist , I must have failed badly, because despite watering at least once a week, my beautiful fern patch looked like someone had sprayed the whole thing with herbicide , and all the fronds turned up their heals almost overnight and shriveled up like they'd been hit by a hard freeze. Incredibly ugly and I've never seen the ferns do that before. I think it was a combo of the very high heat and very low humidity blowing through there for two days solid. Oh well, I'm sure the plants are still alive , though they won't look their best til next spring rolls around!! Previous to that some animals (probably the cats) had also flattened and broken many of the fronds anyway, and I still haven't figured out how to prevent that. Perhaps installing lots of that low fencing all through the area would discourage the cats etc. from roaming through there?? Then the ferns would grow up and cover most of that fencing so it wouldn't be seen??

It's only 69 right now and that feels almost chilly after being near 90 for several days. On top of that there's only a dim overcast sunshine, so even the sun isn't warm today. Oh well, I got up to the eaves and started scraping old paint in the first step towards painting them for the first time in years and that's sure more comfortable to do while it cool. Did I say how much I hate painting ?? It's the first time in maybe ten or fifteen years, though it might be longer. My memory about those long ago chores are a bit fuzzy nowdays on top of everything else. It's possible I did paint those eaves one other time, since I doubt the paint would have lasted this long . Now I just hope , despite needing rain very badly, that it doesn't rain a lot before the painting is done. I don't even have the paint yet!!!

As badly as I want some needed rain, I hate getting up in the morning , when it's so dark and gloomy outside and I'm ready for sun as soon as possible!! It rained all day yesterday, so we finally did get a "soaking" rain, though the total was at best an inch, and we could use three or four about now for a really deep soaking. It's again wet and gloomy this morning , though the weather report says it may clear in the late afternoon. Never got to 70 yesterday so it's feeling a bit chilly again after all those hot days just recently. Once the clouds clear however , our temperatures should be pleasant during the day the rest of the week and sunny and in the 70's, though a bit cool at night. I can't say we haven't had summers with many days colder than that, so I should feel fortunate for some continued warm weather.

MrSeedy
September 18th, 2005, 07:45 AM
Seems we're all a bit bored with the weather lately, seeing so few new posts on the subject! I guess I'm a bit weather "obsessed" in general, and even more now as I'm counting as many days as possible before I have to bring all my container plants back indoors for the winter. Even though our temperatures should be pretty good for most plants, and obviously more comfortable for me, when it's in the seventies, I am finding the cooler mornings a bit "chilly" already. Seems my body thermostat is set somewhere between 70F and 80F to feel comfortable and sometimes even temperatures in the low seventies can make me feel a bit "chilled". Much over 80-85 and with higher humidity and I can't take the heat.
Anyway it's in the 50's this morning outdoors, and my furnace has been on once, and though most of my plants can take 50's at night outdoors, they're already showing signs of slowing their growth and of course the shorter days now are encouraging that as well. Now, if we'd just get some sun today to warm things a bit!!!

Our weather hasn't been too cold yet, but yesterday was so windy, I got up this morning to find more than half my tall plants blown over, and that really wasn't the way I wanted to start my day. I guess however there wasn't too much damage to the plants. It's still supposed to be in the seventies and not too cold at night so if I"m lucky I can leave most outdoors til some time in October. At least I hope so!!
I have to say however, the lobster claw (Heliconia) was brought in a couple of weeks ago , and ever since from the lower light and lower temperatures , even indoors the plant is just sitting there and growth has slowed to near 0. I guess my hopes for continued growth and possible flowering before the house gets too chilly , doesnt' look likely now. Seems those lobster claws like a minimum of 80 degrees for highs and only 60's or better for nightime lows, and also the very high humidity it "was" getting for a while. I've never seen it make such fast growth before as it was doing during our hottest days and the most humid ones. Not a good plant for the average indoor conditions , especially come winter.

It never did warm that much yesterday despite the forcast for somewhat warmer weather. It was such a strange day and didn't warm up until the winds dropped in the late afternoon, and just before sunset, and it was windy again all day. Very chilly this morning with lows in the upper 40's. I'm still holding off on moving my plants indoors , but I guess it will most likely be before October even arrives. It's also time to start washing all those windows that so badly need it. I'd always go around in the fall and wash all windows and storm windows, so my plants could get the maximum light all winter, but I haven't gotten to the windows in a long time now and they badly need it. Wish I could say , "I don't do windows", since it's really not my favorite job, and I have to clean windows at work nowdays!!

Looks like it's a return to reality here with more normal temperatures returning after a somewhat "hot" day yesterday. Anyway, I need to mow "finally" after our rain last Fri. has encouraged the grass to start growing again, and rain is supposed to move in sometime today in front of a cold front. Hopefully our highs will stay at least in the seventies for the next several weeks as I'm still holding off on the "big plant move" back indoors for the winter. I'm finally getting more direct sun in those south windows , which will make for an easier adjustment to lower light indoors for those sun loving plants. I can almost count on the bougainvilleas dropping nearly all their leaves again, as they seem to do almost every fall , when they're brought back indoors. They do hate the sudden drop in light levels, as do many of the other tropicals, and they adjust by dropping leaves that are accustomed to high light, until they can be replaced by leaves that will "do" with less light , I guess.

After a warm day yesterday, storms moved in during the evening and it seemed that one little batch of thunder and heavy rain followed another until we'd gotten maybe two inches of rain. A good soaker probably, but this morning it's very windy and with north winds it's quite chilly , but sunny. Oh well, it's just another taste of fall, but most likely one that will become the norm in the next week or two.
I for one am not ready for summer to end , but my worst concerns were met with that heavy rain yesterday , since I find a not so easy fix leak right over the foot of my bed, and I've never had a leak there before. Now to figure out how to fix that without spending any major money to hire the work done??? Darn , but it was bound to happen sooner or later with the lousy roofingt job the last roofer did about six or seven years ago. After he was done the roof line had two distinct bows in the roof, instead of the roof providing a smooth slope, so I may have water settling in those bows and working up under the shingles!! Just goes to show you , that even with "so-called" professional roofers you may get a "bum" job for your money!!

Fall is here in the Idaho pandhandle. We're having a Indian summer with below freezing at night and warm during the day. Makes for beautiful fall colors. I hate the thought of winter coming on :( but on the other hand it's another day closer to spring.

It's again a cool morning at 52, but considering how cool it was all day yesterday it could easily been in the mid or low 40's this morning had the wind dropped and with the clear skies overnight. I'm holding off with moving everything back indoors til the lows start running in the forties at night, but those cool highs aren't the best thing either for most tropicals and I think sometimes , when you leave those plants out in the "cool" for to long , they go into shock with the move indoors and the suddenly much warmer indoor temperatures. It just doesn't pay to leave the plants out so late that those temperature differences between outdoors and indoors are so different. Meanwhile , we're not supposed to get much sun today and with the clouds , I doubt we'll get to 70 again.

I guess as is typical of both spring and fall , we'll be on a rollercoaster with both our temperatures and rainfall as cold fronts quicly come and go , with the warmest days becomming fewer as the colder days dominate and the average highs and lows drop , so today it's supposed to warm for just one day and then drop back down with more rain in the mix and then turning to much more typical late Sept. weather with highs struggling to get out of the sixties. I guess we could still use more rain after our summer long drought, but I'm already tired of rain after the heavy rain the other day, and I'm not sure the garden needs it. All it mean comming this time of year, is that the lawn will start growing quickly again, and that's lots of extra mowing , that I just have gotten to hate the past few years. Oh well, it could be lots worse and colder, and so far there are no signs of any eary frost.

What a strange rain this morning!!! It's raining fairly hard , but instead of the normal "large drops" it's falling in tiny little drops that seem very gentle , but no less wet. I guess we're making up for lost time with the rain lately, but now it's time to watch all those container plants , so they're not too soggy with the upcooming cold spell comming. I guess our first blast of really much cooler air and very chilly nights is on the way, and I'm not eager to see that . It's one thing for tropicals to adjust to a few days of much cooler weather, but that combined with soggy roots can mean serious damage for some tropicals.

After all the dire predictions about Rita - not a single drop of rain in my little piece of Texas. 102 all weekend and again today.

I wish some of that Texas heat would come up here, since we're getting the coldest morning since way last spring with a low in the low to mid forties. Looks like even colder weather with lows in the thirties is on the way, and I'm not ready for that! I guess it's not unusually early for our first real fall cold snap, but I hope we warm up again , at least for a couple of weeks.

BRRRRRR! It's only 42 here this morning and the furnace has been on twice already, and on top of that. rain and a much colder (front) is on it's way over night.
I hate cold weather already and it's not even here yet!!! I complained just a few weeks ago to my mom , that it was too hot for painting her shed in it's southern exposure and I wanted to wait for cooler weather, but should she not get the paint soon, I don't like spending time outdoors for long once it get's into the fifties even , especially if there's much wind on top of that. Oh well, the weather changes overnight this time of the year , and the seasons as well!!

Two more days and it will be a new thread! Sure feels like it this morning and every container plant in my garden has been blown over by overnight storms and rain as a very "cold" front moved in. Yuk , I hate wind and cold, and I'm sure my poor plants do as well!!

I think my post in "Too dang cold" said it all, and I saw that Ann Arbor, MI was only 33 this morning. I'm not ready for any frost yet, and I dont' even like those ups and downs in my indoor temperatures all day long between the cycles of the furnace. I swear between the "on" cycle when it can get hotter than Hades, where the wall furnace is , and the time when the "on" is back the temperatures can start feeling very chilly. I guess that's, what I most hate "indoors" with my temperature situation. Constant fluctuations, I never feel comfortable with all winter!! I think if it was "affordable" I'd keep my thermostat at 80 + degrees all winter, but my heating bill would double!!

We finally got some rain and did we ever need it. B) It was like a tinder box here with the fire danger at an extreme high. Wouldn't bother me if it rained for the next three days. :D
