Have your taskbar and Start menu, etc., ever wandered around the page,
becoming more and more embedded in the place you don't want them to
be? Mine eventually reserved half a screen, horizontally, for themselves in bright blue and refused to budge at all.

I'm here to tell you as the biggest cowardy custard when it comes to
working out computer solutions that the XP home SYSTEM RESTORE
(you have to shut down and then start in SAFE MODE by pressing F8)
worked perfectly. I asked it to restore to yesterday (13th) and it did
-presenting a workable desktop and not causing any problems otherwise.

There's at least one other way of fixing this problem, I believe, but the SYSTEM RESTORE was simple and effective.

I had to use system restore quite frequently when I had xp but so far with Vista I've had no problems.

right-click the start button and then left-click in properties and go to the Taskbar tab and put a checkmark in the box next to 'lock taskbar' and it will stay put.

Joclyn, this time it had somehow unlocked itself and gone mad,
taking up half the screen and not responding to any simple actions,
freezing itself into the position it had chosen. I really don't know what
I did to deserve this, although I do know from reading advice online that
it happens in varying degrees to others.

But thanks - I understand what you are saying about keeping it locked normally. I'm hoping it stays put forever !
