I"ve always wondered what those black and white ones, I'm seeing so much in my gardens are! Now I know and thanks for the ID. They quite a bit larger than the regular yellow jackets , but not so abundant in my gardens as the yellow jackets.
They also don't seem to be so agressive , as the yellow jackets are said to be this time of year. I could walk in the yard this time of year , and immediately be buzzed by a passing yellow jacket this time of the year, and I've been stung without any provocation on my part by the yellow jackets.

Hi MrSeedy. I've been lucky this year, I've been out with the camera most days and haven't been stung yet. I was stung once last year but that was when something was inside my shirt and I swatted it. Otherwise I have had no problems and I do get close to them. These photos are to help with the ID.

Hi gardenlady. There are a lot of black and yellow ones around but aren't aggressive like the yellow jackets. They do take care of a few other things like the picture wher one has an ear wig.
