composting clothes

how long does it take for clothing to break down in a compost pile? or in a lasagna garden? do i need to cut them up or do i lay them down flat and keep laying in with other organic matter?

Polyester and other synthetic clothing will take much longer, but I used an old cotton sheet as a weed blocker in an area and by the next season it was broke down. Still the threads were messy so I wouldn't recommend using fabrics if you can help it. Flattened cardboard boxes & newspapers worked the best for me. Worms really enjoy breaking those down. :)
