I went for a walk by the creek today trying out my new camera, and as it was high tide there weren't any waders around. This Black Headed Gull sat still on a pillar for me to snap though.

We don't get them where I live 28 miles away from here.

Rich that's a very pretty gull!! I remember lots of varieties of gulls, in California , when I lived right near the ocean, and one especially pretty one with a bright red beak, but ever since that I think it must have been my "imagination" about the red beak , since I can't find that particular one in any bird book I've consulted! Can't imagine , I'd imagine a red beak on a bird if it wasn't there, but they were pretty gulls. Now I only have those herring gulls where I live now!! BTW, for those of us who, haven't heard it before , but in "birder" parlance, the proper name for "seagulls" is actually "gull" without the "sea", though almost everyone calls them "seagulls" for some reason. Funny how common names change sometimes and I guess the original name must have been just "gull". I guess I shouldnt' add confusion to the name thing either, since I usually do call them "seagulls", when talking to most people.
