So does anyone here read the books or watch the movies? Yes I know they are suppose to be kids books but have you seen the size of some of them. The year 5 book The Order of the Pheonix (the movie thats about to come out)was almost 900 pages. I dont know too many kids that have the patience to read that much. Anyway so what do you think

I love them love them love them!! I have the book pre-ordered. I will probably wait to see the movie just because I don't like going to the movies when it is crowded.

I love them too. I got started reading them strictly by accident. Somebody had left a copy of the first one in my car and after that I was hooked. I read them as soon as they were available. Then I fell behind a bit but I always read the book before I see the movie. I just finished #5 and am starting #6. I too will probably wait to rent the movie though that way it gives me a little time to forget a few things so its more of a surprise:lol:

Im actually surprised that people dont show up dressed as witches and wizards for these movies. There were pirates at the Pirates of the Carribean movies, anything to stand out ya know

Well  I'm not against the Potter books by any means. I think anything that entices reading and imagination is great. I just think there were/are better stories out there that didn't get as much hoopla. I wouldn't say it's great piece of literature but if it creates a bit of magic in the mind, I think that's wonderful. :)

That is wonderful. I bet a lot of kids who wouldn't normally read have read those books - and that is what is important!

I agree boo, anything that gets kids reading and using their imaginations is good. I'm not a fan though, just cannot get into the books or the movies.

I am a fan, I read "Order of the pheonix" twice and have all books, going to pre order last one "The deathly hallows" soon. I love the movies. The next book will be the final one.
The first time "the philosphers stone" came out, I was not so keen, but since "The chamber of secretes" I have been a fan. The last book "The Half Blood Prince" is very good, especially near the end. I don't read much boosk, but for things like that I do.
Only other books I read are butterfly and moth, plants and insect and animal books and a few others if I like them.

I'm not a big fan either. I've watched the movies because of the kids and I've read a couple of books because the kids asked me to. But I find they're aimed at kids. Mine enjoy reading them, so I get the rundown on each book from them, whether I want it or not.

Books brilliant, films good.

I haven't read the books (but will one day) but have seen every movie so far. I love the special effects especially on a big screen in a dark movie theatre.

From the age of fifteen (I remember the exact day, the exact time) I
realised that I preferred non fiction and this hasn't changed, but I
LOVE the Harry Potter series, and the films too. I started reading my
grandson's copies, and (somewhat to my surprise) had to read them in
great chunks. Perhaps her prose isn't of the highest order, but she pushes
the story along and keeps the reader wanting to read more.
Bits of the first film always stand out in my mind: Platform nine and three
quarters, Diagon Alley, Gringotts Bank with its goblins..Snape...lots more. Delicious.

I have been a bookworm since age three. I never liked fantasy but have loved Harry Potter. I would not have picked one up to read but my friend gave me the first on tape to listen to as I drove from St. Louis to PA. I had to keep riding around the block when I got there to finish the book because I could not turn it off. The tapes are so well done and great if you have kids riding with you.
The series has made readers out of many many kids who never would have invested time away from video games and I applaud these books for that. Can't wait to have a Harry marathon and watch all the movies in one weekend as we do Star Wars movies. Now there was another legend that probably could have pulled in readers if it had been marketed that way as well. Oh, and there were plenty of wizards in costume at the theatre I attended.
Penny, what was the occasion that remains so well in your memory?

I had heard they were "really bad" so I decided to read the first one to vet it if you like.I read ahead quite a bit as we only got through about a chapter a night aloud, there was nothing untoward in there, it's a simple good verses evil story. We read the first two aloud and by the third the eldest was proficient enough to have her own bookmark.By the fourth there were 3 bookmarks and many cries of "Whose got the book".
If you have only seen the movies you are doing yourself a dis-service ,there is so much left out of the movies The Society For Protection Of Elvish Workers (SPEW) for one thing.I think these books and The Bridge To Terabithia are great because they encourage children to practise a skill they have lost, use their imagination.
If you have never read the books (or even 1 of the books ) or seen a movie how can you make a judgement. I may or may not like saurkraut ,I don't know I have never tried it.

I too just love reading. Its my escape from reality I think a way to let the stresses of daily life go. I usually read mystery and suspense type books, Dean Koontz is my favorite author. I like fantasy movies but some of the more adult fantasy books I just cant seem to get into. Ive found that books are always better than the movies because you do get more detail. Im just starting the Half-Blood Prince then its Organic Chemistry for Dummies!! Sounds exciting doesnt it

Hi Donna. I have tried sauerkraut, and it is not as bad as it sounds !
But a little bit goes a long way.
Galu, I must have been gradually realising that I preferred non fiction, but
the exact time that I totally realised it was when I was in a small
local council library, the kind that moves into a school, lets you take out two books and then shuts up the library until the next week! It was like a
minor revelation. In these far off days, it was not always easy to find
good interesting non fiction, as a lot of public money was spent on novels.
My library now lets me take out twelve books at a time (or tapes, or cds) and they do have
interesting non fiction now.
I too have always been a bookworm, and I can still hear my poor mother telling me to put down the book and do (dusting, tidying, whatever) with
TWO HANDS! I was read to until I just turned five, and another thing I
vividly remember is reading my first story. The first sentence went
along very slowly, as if it was a car riding over speed humps, and then after
that it got quicker and quicker and then I was a true reader.
It is a memory that has never faded, although other memories have.

I read the first one with my step-daughter and have been hooked ever since! I have every book and movie.
I love to read, and will read anything that will hold my interest:p.
We also love to do Star Wars marathons, and Lord of the Rings, usually in the winter snuggled up in a warm blanket and lots of munchies:p

You know the reason they have put all the windup flashlights into production over the last several years is because all the parents were having to keep buying batteries because the kids were reading Harry under the covers at night... or so I think. I remember Nancy Drew one night and as I came up from under the sheets to turn off my light a large bat shadow flew across the room. A bat had flown into my room because I had dropped the screen out the window when I opened it that night. Now that was scarey. We ended up catching it with one of those great big plastic golf clubs. I keep the windows closed and the air conditioning on at night no matter how nice the breeze may be.

I love nancy drew!! I have a few of the books still and occassionally I will pick one up and read it just for fun. Not really interested in seeing that movie though, I just cant imagine it being nearly as good. But maybe that is one movie that i am just too old to appreciate . I will watch the Harry Potter movie but will most likely wait until it comes out on DVD. The online ticket sales have already outsold Spiderman 3 and Pirates of the Carribean

The cover price on the book is £17.99 ($35).
Fortunately Tescos are selling it for £10 ($19.20) or £5 ($9:60) if you spend more than £50 in the store.
By buying two jars of coffee instead of one etc. DW got the bill up to £69 and we got the book for £5.

Now I was disappointed with the 5th movie. It left too much of the book out and the changes were distracting. I guess thats what I get for seeing the movie so soon after reading the book. The 3-D part was pretty cool though!! I havent bought the book yet. I went to the store to get it but it was $35!!! I thought that was a bit much so I will wait for the soft cover version and pay under $10 for it. I suppose I will have to wait a while though and I hope I dont hear too much about what happens before I get a chance to read it.

I went to the store to get it but it was $35!!!Ravenhawk, you must have found the only shop in the world to be selling it at the full price.
Wallmart (Asda here) were selling it for £5 ($10.28)
The wholesale price is £9.89 ($20.35)
Last Wednesday...
Asda says that it has this afternoon sent money to the publisher of the eagerly-awaited Harry Potter book in an attempt to settle the row which has threatened to halt delivery of its 500,000 copies.
Bloomsbury, which is due to publish the last instalment in J.K. Rowling's bestselling children's series at midnight on Friday, said earlier that it had cancelled Asda's order because the supermarket chain owed it money.
The row over the alleged unpaid bill was however being seen in some quarters as a smokescreen for a more bitter dispute over the cost of the book.
Asda yesterday accused Bloomsbury of exploiting Potter-mania to rip off children, saying that the £17.99 price tag for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was too high, and that the publisher was "attempting to hold children to ransom". Peter Pritchard, Asda's director of general merchandise, accused Bloomsbury of "blatant profiteering".
Sales have broken records.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has thrown off concerns over internet spoilers and broken embargoes to confirm its position as the world's fastest-selling book today, with Nielsen Bookscan estimating a staggering 2.7m copies sold in the UK of the seventh and final book during a hectic period of just 24 hours - a 35% increase on first-day sales of JK Rowling's last blockbuster, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
