B) It looks to be a species of Cassia, not enough reference here to pin it down. Very cool trees that also bloom yellow. Quite hardy.

WOW! That's a beautiful bloom! I've been waiting on pins and needles for my Mimosa to bloom this year. It's got way more bloom this year than any other year... and I'm really excited. Your blooms look very exquisite! It would be nice to know exactly what it is!

I'd guess Cassia as well, though I didn't think they were hardy past zone 9 or warmer!! I don't think they're tollerate much frost and especially any hard freezes, but it looks like your's may have been there several years??? I think it's beautiful!!!

the longevity of these trees seems to be a few years in this area - so my guess is winter-kill, but that is just a guess, could be drought, as most examples i've seen are just growing at the roadside.
i've never seen one achieve more than maybe 12' to 15' in height.
when i first moved here, i tried to purchase a mimosa from a local nurseryman - he said the reason he didn't sell them was that ". . . in this area they only last, maybe 7 yrs. . . " he blamed the occasional hard winter, so i extrapolate.
i collected seed from one that was grown in a half-barrel in front of a favorite restaurant yrs ago.
only mention that 'cause it lasted as long as any of the ditch dwellers i've noticed, even though the roots were more exposed to temps.?
i've got 4 of them planted in various places on the property, hopeful to find that "magic" location
where one will "live long and prosper" (that's for z5guy  )
anyhow, i really appreciate all your help so far and if you happen across any further info. . .
. . . i'd really like to nail it down.
oh, and by the way, they're setting seed pods a few of which are starting to ripen. anybody wanna try?
an aside to mr. s -
don't you think one of these would look amazing with butterfly pea entwined in it?
i mean, that true blue with the hot orange, and both with the pea form flower???
i may have some pea vine seeds left - they'd be several years old - wish me luck!

It could be cassia rosburghii which has pink-red flowers, but I am not sure.

Maybe we have a different type of mimosa around here (zone 7) but I know lots of them live longer than 7 years! ;) There are lots of really big ones in the yards of older homes that I know are much older than that! <_< They grow like weeds around here and most people consider them a nuisance because they sprout up everywhere. I love it when they're in bloom because the hummers really are attracted to them! :D

yeah harley, i think you're right.
i know that mimosas are short-lived, as trees go, but i don't know where that guy got his numbers  ?
"course that was years ago, maybe this area had just been through some pretty bad winters -
or maybe, he was a idjit  !
adenium ~ i googled cassia roxburghii, and i was certain you were right!!
the tree form was right - the flower color was right - everything!
until i scrolled down to a close-up of the flowers, unless the site included the wrong pix,
they were showing a five petaled form instead of the pea type on my lil tree. <_<
??????????????????????what the heck izzat thang?????????????????????????????

^_^ okay - nevermind (ala emily littella) ^_^
i found it -
:( (eyes downcast, scuffing toe in carpet) :(
my lovely treasure is -
sesbania punicia ("scarlet wisteria"/"false poinciana" or "rattlebox")
and, apparently i can thank my lucky stars that it's not very hardy in this area,
cuz where it is hardy - it's considered a noxious weed
- did i mention i've planted 4 of them around the property?? aw poop!!
sincerely appreciate all your help
^_^ unspeakably embarrassed (slinking away with tail tucked) ^_^
