Okay, I admit it...I have always thought garden gnomes were ridiculously smurfish freaks! Never, would I ever have a garden gnome in one of my gardens!!! Well....I've grown sort of fond of the little buggers....I CONFESS IT!!! I WANT ONE!!! I was at a local garden showplace and they had concrete gnomes, really round with hilarious expressions! I also saw some that had a plain sandstone finish. I really like those! Can anyone point me to a gnome orphanage where I could adopt one like I've described...for a reasonable $$?
The more I see them, the more I love them!! Thanks for helping me with my gnome discrimmination. I have been successfully rehabilitated!

That's absolutely hilarious Jasmine! I too, was one of those who thought that garden ornaments were unsightly and crass. I now have stuff around my gardens tastefully placed..... I think!

We were at Big Lots yesterday and almost bought a couple. They had little ones you could put in pots (they were on sticks made of resin) and little ones perched on stones for each were $2.50. I think they'd be great starter gnomes for the gnomeless. I would have gotten them, but my DD wouldn't stay put in the cart so we had to go.

I am really partial to balls made from colorful glass. I have them tucked in here and there and everywhere. I also have been an "ornament snob" but broke with my loudly spoken rule. Last month I bought an armarilly. Then last Sunday, I was in Tuesday Morning and found a cement angel/cherub sitting on an orb and blowing a kiss. She is painted to look like she has moss growing on her (I'm going to fix that by getting some real moss to take hold). Now She is going to sit on top of my well casing, instead of the armarilly (but first I have to paint the awful turquois PVC casing a more descrete color - my neighbor has been on my case to do this since two years ago when I had the well casing extended above ground level). I have to stay out of the stores before I find something else and change my mind again.

Forgive me, but what is an armarilly?

Forgive me, but what is an armarilly?
OOPS, an armarilly is proof that I am not the best at spelling. We need spell check here! Maybe an armarilly is a cross between an armadillo and a hillbilly? I really needed one of those!
I actually bought an Armillary. It is a sphere made up of bands of metal, and has an arrow shooting throught it at an angle. Mine is a cheap imitation (from Lowes), but they are supposed to represent the zodiac, relationships of the sun/earth/moon, and other celestial things. It's kind of like a sundial, but it doesn't tell the time of day. I guess this is all as clear as mud. I guess I liked it because it was round?

I have a LOT of yard ornaments...too many I think. I have my share of gnomes! I try to keep them near my pond..up close so I see them. I love the colored glass balls but they don't survive my weather. Wind and hail eliminated them. I replaced them with steel balls and some marble ones I made. This year I found some heavy glazed pottery ones that are beautiful. I love a well placed yard ornament but there is nothing trashier looking than to have your yard full of them instead of plants!

I just got one of the little ones on the stones from there like 2 weeks ago. It was my first shopping trip at Big Lots!! He is sitting on my mantle as we speak. I am going to put him in my veggie garden in a few weeks. :)
I always disliked garden gnomes myself....until a few years ago when I became a gnome convert. I only have the little guy and a standard gnomey type that I did when I used to go to ceramics class. I have afeeling more will end up in my life tho.

Digginit, I've seen those things, but never knew what they were called. I guess if I did I wouldn't have asked you what it was because that would have been close enough. ;) I had a sundial once, but I'm not sure where it ended up. Maybe in the greenhouse, I'll have to go look now.
SunnyK aren't those cute? I was going to get a couple, one for me and one for my mom. I was also going to get two of the ones on stakes for my boy and girl to put in some of their potted plants. My DD wouldn't sit still in the cart that day so we just up and left. Maybe next time.
I think the reason I don't have any yard ornaments at the moment is because I am worried of passing tasteful and going on to trashy. Although our yard has a lot of other stuff in it, and not by my choice so perhaps that is also keeping me from having any.
