I love strawberries!!  I ate the first one of the season last night...are June Bearings   yummy

My strawberry patch is new this year and I'm planning on letting it grow bigger with all the shoots and babies they put out until it is a nice size and I can get lots of berries after a while.

So, who else is harvesting their strawberries?  and what kinds do you grow?  Any strawberry patch photos to share??

I love strawberries.  So do my dogs though.  Funny that you mention this because I just snapped this picture about 15 minutes ago.

I'm too lazy to grow strawberries that require much effort.  I grow the alpine strawberries.  I use them as a ground cover and I even use them in my flower beds.  Like that one is actually growing in a corner in front of a large rock and then there are hostas, ferns and rose behind the rock.  I get to enjoy some of the strawberries but mostly they are for the wildlife.

Mmmm, I love strawberries too! In fact that's what 'Ichigo' means in Japanese.

I have some sort of 'wild' strawberry growing in spots here and there in my yard. Now I'm wondering if they might alpine strawberries? Boo, are yours really, really small? Whenever Taite sees them he picks and eats them. I kind of freak out and tell him not too, because they are in the back yard, and I always say to him "what if Vash peed on that?!"

I bought the everbearing strawberry plants for my grandkids. They produce from now until the snow flies. We planted them in a container that we keep on the deck. The squirrels love them but we do manage to harvest a few for ourselves. Late fall we heel them into the veggie garden then lift them in spring and put them back into a container.

Boo my old Sam loved strawberries, carrots and popcorn. I'm not sure about young Sam with the strawberries but he does love carrots.

Sash, I've been wanting to try the everbearing kind, they do sound great!

Ichi, I was going to ask you what your name meant.  I think you mentioned it once before, but I had forgotten.    That is cool

Boo, I love your idea of putting them into the flower beds, so I think I know where some of my next young shoots will be planted.

Nat, I tend to mix herbs and fruits in my flower beds.  All of those find their way into the "vegetable garden" too.  I guess its a bit of a kitchen garden.

Natalie I love strawberries, but have never grown any of my own. I buy alot of them when they are in season, so it would probably pay me to try and grow some. This may sound yukky to some of you, but I like to take one and dip it in that really sweet condensed, thick can milk. Comes in a small can. Yummy!!

Sneezie, you should give them a try, and just keep replanting your runners, if you love them that much.  They can be some work while you're trying to expand them, but worth it.

Do you know you can turn condensed milk in a can into caramel?  Heat it in a double boiler ...I forgot how long....  and it will carmelize....it might taste even yummier on your strawberries.

We have Everbearing Strawberries hanging in baskets but they dry out too fast.  They also leak the excess water needed nearly 1/4 of a day later after the heat dries it out.

But is Fragaria Virginiana a strawberry worth growing?  It always shows up in the garden bed and I'm letting some of it grow on its own for now.  If its not edible then I'll pull them out.

I only have 2 strawberry plants and so far the fruits get ate by slugs before I get them picked. Strawberry plants do best in the ground verses containers.

They're fine in a large container if you're willing to water. The nice thing about having them in a container is you don't get the slugs chewing on them.

I have two strawberry plants myself, if I remember correctly they are Ozark Beauty's. They did bear a few fruits that were very tastey. Unfortunately the rest of the fruits went to the ants because they decided to infest them. I am looking for ways to keep the ants away from my strawberries without using chemicals. I would like to keep my garden organic and I have two still curious 9 year old puppies that have been known to climb up on the patio bench and get themselves a snack with my porch garden lol.

Gooniest, try turmeric to keep the ants at bay.  They absolutely hate the stuff.  I've had problems in the past with ants taking over containers and even root balls in the garden so when I see ants start to congregate somewhere I don't want them I sprinkle turmeric around the area.  It doesn't take much.  If you don't have any in your spice rack you can buy a bottle in the spice isle of any store.   It really works.  Won't hurt your plants or your pups.
