Not your grandma's coneflower...

Have you guys seen all the variety of coneflowers offered now?

Dreamy Echinacea

I really like...

Echinacea 'Hot Papaya' and Echinacea 'Tomato Soup'

Has anyone grown these two?  After poking around in the dirt I think my Echinacea 'Harvest Moon' may actually come back this spring  so its tempting to give another one of these beauties a shot.

I gave up on any coneflowers but the purple.  The others are too short lived.  And they're not cheap.  To have them for only a year or two isn't worth it.  It's a shame because some of them really are pretty.

That pretty much is the way I've approached them too but I think mine are coming back for a second round so two years of blooms might be worth it.  That hot papaya is a funky looking creature that looks to be straight out of a Dr. Seuss book.  I like it!!

oh my gosh...Dr. suess... no kidding

That tomato soup one is drool worthy .... wow!  Are those colors true, I wonder??  These are gorgeous.  I saw "Milkshake" in one of my mags, and thought it was pretty, but I don't have a pic to share.

I am a coneflower fanatic!  I put in Tomato Soup last year... and of the new intro's...this one SEEMS pretty sturdy.  It IS a beautiful red color!  Would love to try Hot Papaya...oh, and the other one I hope to get this year is Tiki Torch.

I put in After Midnight and Twilight a couple years ago....but they do not seem like very good performers.

Here is Tomato Soup...TomSoupRes.jpg

Stunning!  It's nice to see the color is true to the enticing photos on the web.  I think I'm going to have to get that one.  Thanks for sharing your photo.

I agree with Blue they do not last long enough to spend the amount of money they want for them.  It is like the Hercs. not living long.

Do you think this is the point of the growers to make people keep replacing perennials?

I'm with Blue and Aud. I bought harvest moon coneflower, Big Sky Ehinacea ('Matthew Saul'). It never came back the second year and I paid a pretty penny for it. It wasn't on sale. I also tried a white which I can't remember the name of but it did the same, poof it was gone over the winter. So I'm just going to stick to my purple which is an old faithful and blooms for an extended period.

I've had the same problem with the reds and oranges over here not lasting any more than a season, but the Green Envy I bought and kept in a pot, is coming back again this year, I might try one of them again and keep it the same way to see how it does, I love them

I just found a pretty good price on "tomato soup", so I ordered one.  We'll see how it does.

Grindle, mine would last two, maybe 3 years then poof, gone.  The only ones that stay around are the purple.

Jennie, a friend had Green Envy and said it disappeared after 2 years.

yes? oh ..sometimes I feel more like poo..

Donna did you have to leave when your plants were still dormant?  I moved during the month of Feb. and totally forgot my rose bushes.

The coneflowers are expensive especially locally because they come in the gallon size which usually means 3 1/2 plug in a gallon of potting soil for $18.

I've heard the same thing, wich is why I'm not willing to pay up to $20 for one!

It's such a shame because they're so pretty.  I paid not quite that much, but pretty close for the ones I had bought.

Boo.  Isn't that the truth.  The ones I bought were actually bigger ones because I bought them in the fall, but that's what the garden centre has now.  Plugs in gallon containers so they can sell them for more.

don't you hate them doing that I tip the plant out of it's pot to see if there are roots, if it's only compost I can see, I leave it.
The Green Envy I got at a show and he was selling them for a very good price, but I wouldn't have paid the high price for one

That makes me mad too ... good idea grindle, I will be tipping over pots at the garden centers from now on.

I should mention the tomato soup plant I ordered is from someone on ebay for only $7.50.  I always look for everything on there now, you can usually find it cheaper.
She won't be sending it until we get more into April.  I hope it does well.

I have to confess, that just as a matter of personal taste that the old fashioned Echinaceas never seemed to interest me much and I've never planted one, though the ones pictured make me rethink my thoughts about the group considerably.  I think I'd love adding any of those new ones!  I guess I found the original species one had a color that somehow didn't appeal much to me, though I've had other plants with similar coloring that I liked a lot. No explanation I guess, for that preference I guess!

I have noticed with roses too that stores have not been giving enough tap root thus they die after you plant them it makes me sooooooo mad when they doo that

Donna, did your landlord finally give in and say you could do some plantings around the property?

That is so if anything changes they can charge  for altering the property.  That is how I won my case against my previous tenants.  I took pics before they moved in.

I too lost every cone flower but the originals.  It seemed that they did not last more than a year or two.  I put it down to the high humidity of south Ga so felt I would try in TX again.

Galu...you are probably correct in the humidity being a problem.  Although most of my Cones did OK last year, I could tell they didn't like all the rain and humidity we got.  As some others have mentioned here... the Big Sky series seems to be short-lived....although my Sundown does ok.  We are predominantly sand here which is good since the Cones don't like soggy roots.

"Weird" ones I have that have lasted include RazzMaTazz (about 6 years now and it gets HUGE!),  Fragrant Angel (a white one that hangs in there pretty nicely), Kim's Knee-high (Excellent... short and prolific!) ...and I can't remember the rest!
