Help with potential shrubs for a rock garden

Anyone have good info on possibilities for a rock garden? I would like an evergreen and deciduous shrub or two for this area. The two requirements are they be suited to my area, zone 6b, and relatively inexpensive. I'm in the planning stages now and need to get my plan finished soon.

Depends what you think relatively inexpensive is.  I love miniature conifers and sometimes I've been lucky enough to find them on clearance at places like home depot & lowes.  There are places that sell them online that are reasonable but the plants are really small.  If your ok with it taking a few years to look like something, its a cheaper way to grow.

I want to experiment with propagating them.  I've been drooling over cloning machines..

I am thrifty by nature and necessity, I usually buy small, especially with shrubs and trees because it gives me a chance to trim and train them to the form I want or need in that area, so I'm patient. I was thinking about a low growing juniper or two but was thinking of something that would add a little height as well. I'll have to buy plants in stages and will fill in and experiment with annual flowers until I feel I have it right and go with something permanent. This particular area has been a work in progress for years.

KB, what just popped into my head was a Heath.   Cute evergreen plant that flowers late winter.  All it wants is a trim after blooming and you can usually get at Home Depot.  Would work nicely in a rock garden.

I'll see if I can find some, thanks for the suggestion.

I went Saturday and found a blue star juniper, stonecrop (dragons blood) and some hens and chicks. Lot's of work to do over the next couple of weeks.
