Cacti & Succulents Categories

The plant area is really new to us but the Cacti & Succulents Category really needs some love'n as the Tropical section too.  I've been working on the others but its going to take time.  Since we have more knowledgeable Cacti & Succulent peeps I was wondering if you could give me an idea of categories to list.  Of course we can't list them all but I'm clueless where to begin.  Something like this?  Suggestions please..

Agaves

Aloes
Cacti

Caudiciforms

Euphorbias

Stonecrops
Other

I am not sure where you want to go with the forum but Tender and Hardy Cacti and Succulent would be easy enough for me.  Most of the time when I look at my collection and posting if I have a name I list it but I do not look for a specific succulent or cacti.

Do what you can where you are with what you have.

Oh this is it for the forum...for now.  I suppose if the subject got really popular we could move on, but I was talking about the plant area.

Cacti & Succulents

That's all we have because hardy sedums are really all I know. I would like to break the category down a bit, but in general terms.

I guess I was surprised to find that there are some plants that could almost be included in the general category as succulents, though they're hardly ever listed or called such.  I tried getting a succulent begonia to survive for me some years ago, but unfortunately found that one a tricky plant to grow and lost it after a few months.  It had very thick stiff furry leaves, and much reminded me of some of the hairy euphorbia species almost, though it's supposed to get flowers much like the form of the angel wing begonias.  Most likely over watered it perhaps, and that caused the death!  If you think about it regarding begonias, it seems they do have the required very high water content in leaves and stems common to most succulents, which gives them that name!

"A Rose by any other name...is still a "thorny" issue".

Are these categories going to be something on the side? Or as a description for the Cacti & Succulent forum? I'm not sure what you need it for & there are definitely too many to list. Some popular groups would be (other than what you have already):

(Cacti could also be broken down-but there are many of these as well...Mammillaria Opuntia, etc.)

Aeonium
Crassula
Echeveria
Gasteria
Haworthia
Kalanchoe
Mesembs
Sedum
Senecio
Sempervivum
Jungle Cacti (Christmas cactus, etc.)
Yucca

Should there be an Other or Misc. for any odd balls that are uploaded?

It's for our plants section.  I am hesitant to call it a plant database because that seems too large scale and overwhelming.  More like a place where members can rate and review their favorites.  I place to recommend species that some people (me!) might not have a clue about.  The structure would then be something like this...

Cacti & Succulents

- Aeonium
- Crassula
- Echeveria
- Gasteria
- Haworthia
- Kalanchoe
- Mesembs
- Sedum
- Senecio
- Sempervivum
- Jungle Cacti (Christmas cactus, etc.)
- Yucca

- Other or Misc?

Where is the appropriate place to share cactus/succulent photos? I like to show some of mine off from time to time, but hate for you to have to move all the pics somewhere else. :)

Boo, I would say that list gives enough variety of the genus most often found & the misc. section should cover the others. I would add back the ones in your orig. list:  Agave, Euphorbia, etc. (maybe leaving out Stonecrop--as that would be included in Sedum).

Thanks so very much.   Smurfboy, you can add your photos here or soon the categories will be up that I'm working on.  I'll be working on plant profiles for cacti & succulent examples if you want to share your photos there.  They are still your photos but they'll be in a more permanent location that is less likely to be buried like on the forum.

We'll have galleries next week in our profiles.

Boo, I'm laughing at myself...because I just read your signature & saw that you had a "QC" garden. I wondered what on earth kind of garden you could have? You see, I used to work in QC...Quality Control! Ha ha ha!

So, where are these Quad Cities located? Have been meaning to ask.

Ha! Hmm, well-managed sounds better than anal retentive..but yeah there is a control factor there.   Quad Cities are along the banks of the Mississippi River, both Iowa and Illinois side.  We're about 2.5 hours from Chicago.

Smurfboy, is your name D.S. Franges & do you live in Tucson? Because that pic above belongs to that person. I'm guessing you found it online? It tells you right there what it is, as it also states in the url for your pic...Echinopsis spachiana. The pic was taken in Tucson, not Georgia. What's the deal??? I don't believe you're allowed to post other people's pix without permission.

Rosemarie, My friend has one in her Georgia garden, I did not say it was taken there. If the owner puts her trademark on a picture, then you cannot post it without permission.

Smurfboy1977 actually the picture is copyrighted by the owner whether they put a watermark on the photo or not.

I don't think smurboy meant any harm.  I never knew all the details about copyrights either.  Thanks for the info, Boo.

I'm sorry...I took it the wrong way. You posted a pic & then stated it was blooming in Georgia. I took it to mean the plant in the photo was in Georgia.

As Boo has said, you do not need a copyright on the pic. They are still the property of the owner. You normally need to ask permission before using one you find on the net. That's one reason I asked when I first joined here about copyrights, to be sure my photos would not become someone else's. If folks think they can take pix & use them without giving the owner credit for the photo (at least) then I would not be posting my pix at all. I've had my photos taken & used at others' sites...so this is a sore spot for me.

Last time I was on ebay I saw one of my photos used.  The Internet has opened so much information that its easy to take it for granted and think everything is free to use especially google images.

I know of one site that sells cacti & succulents... that takes people's pix off the 'net & Photoshops them...sometimes just cropping them, others they flip & even worse...they take the body of a cactus & put the flower of another...then enhance the color & call it "Rainbow Burst"...all for a sale...never once asking the owner's permission to use the photograph! Buyer beware of phoney baloney stuff!

Its kinda hard to ask permission to use a picture when you don't know where it came from.

If it is on Google, you can click on the photo & it should take you to the site where it originated. I would suggest you just give a link (the url) to the site where the photo is hosted, instead of copying & inserting into your posts. That way you are safe from copyright infringement. If you really feel the need to copy & paste, you can see if there is some contact info (e-mail) on the site & ask permission to use. If you don't know where the photo came from & you don't know who the owner is, then don't use it. Simple!
