He was in my front yard tonight. Im thinking I saw one like it last spring but he didnt stick around. Its definitely not something I see around here very often. Unfortunately for both of us my feeder is empty. I hope he comes back.

Does this site offer any help? I am woefully ignorant about many -most- birds that do not fly into my garden.

The closest match I could see was the
Western Spindalis (tanager). This site offers birds' calls.

That is an Eastern Towhee. I have the west coast version which is called a Spotted Towhee.

OMG we had one in the yard the other day too but now he is gone again... He sure was cute, and fun to watch..

A Towhee is what I thought too. We have them in the yard all the time, they're a wonderful little bird.

We had one in our yard too! According to my national audubon book it is a "Rufous-sided Towhee"

It is the same one I saw last spring. They dont stick around all summer I must be on his migration path or something. I sure hope he comes back

Jennie is right! It is a Rufous-sided Towhee! They are all over North America. Very pretty!!
The female is similar, with brown where the male is black. They are named for their call, "to-whee."

I know...TMI!!
Tickle the earth with a rake and she will giggle flowers!
