Fall Leaves Locked wiki

The Midwest fall garden is a glorious sight to behold. I’m often guilty of taking it for granted, or perhaps even ignoring it knowing it is a precursor to the dreary winter. But once I shake that feeling, it truly is a wonderful time of year.

While planning my garden – I use ‘planning’ very loosely - some of my favorite plants and trees were chosen, not because of their blossoms, but for their amazing foliage. Fall leaves can offer spectacular color to the garden. When you think of fall leaves, your first thoughts are probably the dramatic color changes of trees, but many plants in the garden add color as well.

You’ve probably noticed that many perennial leaves turn a nice, bright yellow as they start to go dormant. Other perennials such as Tiarella, Heuchera, Geraniums and Ferns offer the garden an array of beautiful colors as the seasons change.

Vines such as Boston Ivy add fall leaves with brilliant red hues and shrubs like the Oakleaf Hydrangea, Purple Smoke Bush & Barberry offer rich red hues to purple leaves as the temperatures cool.

Beyond fall leaves, the seeds left from summer’s blooms add a nice interest to the garden. My favorite is the funky, furry seeds of the Clematis.

So while you may be busy with all the garden chores that need to be done before winter, take a second glance at the garden around you. Enjoy the colorful show of fall leaves because, at least for those of us in the colder regions, this is the last fireworks display of color before a sleepy, winter garden settles in.
