Garden Design

Few gardeners are happy with a cookie cutter design, because like the interior of their home, they want their garden to also reflect their personality. The difference between a manicured, landscaped yard and a garden, is the artist behind the shovel.

The Design Of Your Garden

Garden Design Tips

Assess the space you have to work with.

Note any areas that might be worth incorporating into your new garden design or areas that will need to be hidden from view.

List your landscape requirements. What are your desires and what are your practical needs for the space? Examples of practical needs would be: a space for the children to play, a area for pets or a patio area to entertain guests.

Choose a style. For instance some gardeners love the wild look of a cottage garden, while others might prefer a more formal theme. Don't be afraid to adapt different elements to create your ultimate garden design.

Sketch the pattern of your design on paper. Laying out pathways, plantings, sitting areas and lawn areas. Once you are happy with a design on paper, lay the design out using hoses or landscaping spray paint on your garden space.

Select trees, shrubs and plants to add to your garden design.

Add decorative touches: mulches, decor, lighting, garden edging & special features.

Plant Combinations

Deciding which plants to include in your garden design can be an overwhelming experience if you're not sure of which plants to use. There are many great websites that offer garden plans that use great plant combinations which can enhance your own design. We have made a list of these sites here - Garden Plans. Other ways to be inspired are to examine gardens in your city, participate in local garden walks and browse area nurseries which offer plant selections for your zone. Flip through garden books and gardening magazines, taking note of any plant combinations that catch your eye. Get ideas from viewing photographs of other gardener's flower pictures and partake in online gardening forums for planting suggestions.

Trade Seeds & Plants..

When it comes to the design of your garden you may think big instantly, or your goal may take several years. Unfortunately, for some of us, our garden plans depend more on the size of our budget, than on the size of our imagination. Supplementing your catalog and nursery purchases by participating in seed exchanges and attending local plant exchanges, can have your plant inventory grow immensely. An instant garden is great for some, but there is something special about many gardeners contributing to your masterpiece.
